Stop the "Elon Gave a Nazi Salute" Nonsense We need to be serious grown-ups.

I have to be honest, I really don't see the Nazi salute on this one. I think @hpluckrose.bsky.social had this right: www.hpluckrose.com/p/stop-the-e...

There's a real risk of losing credibility by continuing to pounce on video clips taken out of context.

One that stays on topic.

Who is being lectured by whom, though? I don’t get how anyone’s commentary on this thread could be characterized as Americans lecturing the rest of the world.

14.01.2025 19:54 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

I'm not sure I follow. What do you believe I condone?

And.. are you suggesting that because there are Christian sects in America that marry off children, Americans should close their eyes to when children are married off in the Middle East?

Indeed, many different religions contain religious groups that engage in practices any secular society would find abhorrent.

But, I don't believe that maintaining a distinction between the two reflects simple mindedness. Quite the opposite, actually.

I'm on team "all religions are wrong" all the way but isn't it kind of important to acknowledge that not all religious groups are marrying off little girls?

I'm glad to see Zig getting more attention, I think it's got the right idea with safety. The language is able to be much less complex *without* sacrificing safety when unit tests are able to detect most classes of memory management mistakes.

No matter what context or country, left wingers always seem convinced that the reason that the voters are embracing a right winger is because the left wing government was simply not left wing enough

Seems like social media networks as currently designed are unable to avoid becoming dominated by a minority of users who shout in hyperbole.

To the extent this sentiment is shared, it's strong evidence that Substack is succeeding.

Indeed

Most problematic uses of design patterns seem to stem from programmers β€œliking” a particular pattern, vs understanding the precise conditions where their use is appropriate

In my experience abstract classes are commonly abused by devs who want generalization but don’t really get composition

You’re not exactly screaming β€œI know objectivity when I see it” here in this conversation.

But, yeah, I feel like I’m often noticing people on the right express being fed up with what they keep seeing… on LibsOfTikTok, and it just makes me want to grab their phones and start smashing their unfollow button for their own mental health πŸ˜‚

03.12.2024 15:13 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Ouch. Yeah, I’ve been on the receiving end of it, too.

I think James Damore’s firing was a β€œred pill” moment for a lot of folks in tech. It demonstrated the right wing narrative about the rising illiberal left had at least some legitimacy.

The correct response was the liberal one: defend the guy

03.12.2024 15:09 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

A lot of truth in that, though I also believe the center left should take responsibility for not pushing back where the slacktivists made inroads into actual reality.

The tech world moved far left very quickly about 10 years ago, for instance, & not enough of us moderates spoke out against excesses

Also, louder for the people in the back:

β€œLouder, for the people in the back” is obvious posturing. People who use this tactic this want you to just assume they belong on stage, metaphorically.

OMG @brianna.bsky.social is the most blocked person on this site.

Unblock her, you cowards! πŸ˜‚

This isn’t lining up with my personal experience, for whatever little a single anecdote is worth. The Trump voters in my family/friends network are generally less tribally identified with MAGA than the Harris voters are with #resist (myself excluded)

26.11.2024 22:11 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

How long before we start seeing this?

β€œNext person who suggests this place is an echo chambers gets put on a block list.”

26.11.2024 00:09 πŸ‘ 8 πŸ” 1 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Honest question. Does anyone actually value having a β€œmarketplace” of algorithms?

I predict this ends with charging us $8/mo for the β€œplain old timeline feed of my followers” algorithm.

24.11.2024 16:15 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

Oh okay, thanks for clearing that up

23.11.2024 19:41 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

FYI, the URL is missing the "www" (i.e. it should be www.razibkhan.com)

Defending the civil rights of trans people while navigating the legitimate competing concerns is the obligation of every liberal.

Anyone who shirks that obligation, either by giving up on trans people altogether, or by failing to learn what the legitimate concerns are, is letting trans people down.

21.11.2024 17:43 πŸ‘ 7 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

I don’t think that way.

19.11.2024 01:10 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

So?

19.11.2024 00:17 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

No

17.11.2024 18:46 πŸ‘ 2 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

It’s definitely happening here

17.11.2024 18:26 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

This is the chief problem with using block lists. Blanket importing other folk's ideas about who you should and shouldn't listen to is fraught!

"Starter packs" could be useful if we turned this inside out - for example, I'd love a curated list of smart good-faith conservatives (yes they exist!)

16.11.2024 15:44 πŸ‘ 7 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

Liberalism must adapt to this reality or die. There's no going back.

For their own survival, liberal communities on social media need to outcompete their rivals, the tribal echo chambers, for influence -- without becoming echo chambers in the process.

16.11.2024 15:38 πŸ‘ 20 πŸ” 4 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Social media:

- Makes mental illness transmissible
- Especially via politics
- The "cure" for the mental illness it causes is to hole up in an online echo chamber
- Those echo chambers drive news cycles, and therefore influence even those who abstain from it

IOW it's superweapon against liberalism
