Image is a stack of copies of the Bill on a dark wood table. The front page reads: A BILL TO Establish the right to breathe clean air; to require the Secretary of State toachieve and maintain clean air in England; to make provision about environmental targets and minimum standards in relation to clean air; to make provision about the powers, duties and functions of public bodies in England in relation to air pollution; to give the Office for Environmental Protection additional powers and duties related to clean air; to require the Secretary of State to comply with the United Nations Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution; to require the Secretary of State and public authorities to apply specified environmental principles in carrying out their duties under this Act; and for connected purposes.
I am so proud to have introduced this Bill to Parliament last year with cross-party support.
I am determined to see Ellaβs Law voted on and passed through Parliament, and I strongly urge the Govt to adopt it in the upcoming Kingβs Speech.
Whatever it takes, this vital Bill must become law.
Image shows Sian Berry stood to the left of campaigner Rosamund Adoo-Kissi-Debrah, and surrounded by a group of clean air campaigners. All of them are smiling and holding a copy of Ella's Law - the Clean Air (Human Rights Bill).
Image shows Rosamund Adoo-Kiss-Debrah sat next to Sian with a copy of Ella's Law on the table in front of them. They are both reading the Bill that is named in memory of Rosamund's daughter Ella who died aged nine due to exposure to air pollution.
Ellaβs Law has been published π
No child should have the growth of their lungs stunted because of dirty air where they live and play, yet this is the reality of air pollution in England. Ellaβs Law would change this.
My thanks to Rosamund and all the hard-working campaigners demanding change.
βThe code recommends people take steps to protect themselves from air pollution and to reduce their contribution to the problem. This includes keeping homes free of smoke by not burning materials such as coal or woodβ¦β

"Air pollution harms every organ in the bodyβfrom lungs and heart to brain and bloodβcausing asthma, stroke, heart disease, cancer, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Today, it is recognized as the largest environmental risk to human health worldwide... "

"The question for policymakers is whether they'll let that equation be solved by the science β or by the industry's legal team."
Very disappointing, the government is still completely missing the point! "Ready to Burn" wood and "modern" stoves are the problem in residential areas, not the solution!

"Low smoke doesn't mean low risk: all solid fuels found to emit ultrafine particles".
New research has found that using βlow-smokeβ fuels results in a two to three-fold increase in ultrafine particle emissions.

βIβm shocked. Iβve actually never heard of anything like this - industry lobbying public health servants to ignore a serious public health issue and go against medical advice...β

The depths to which this despicable industry will sink really knows no bounds! Their profits always come before public health. Unbelievable!

Did you know? Most people who burn wood do so for enjoyment or the atmosphere. Only a small minority rely on wood burners as a primary heat source. Source: DEFRA/Kantar

We submitted our evidence to the Environmental Audit Committee's #AirPollution inquiry earlier.
This is a very timely read from @nateaston.bsky.social into the process of pitching for the inquiry, and how the collaboration from the #CleanAir movement worked!

Air pollution is a health crisis: ~900 premature deaths in Birmingham each year, and thousands of children hospitalised.
The World Health Organization says no level of air pollution is safe, and 1 in 11 UK children have asthma.

Congratulations to Hannah Spencer!
We were pleased to hear Hannah speak about #AirPollution in her acceptance speech. As a candidate, she committed to working to clean up the air for GM's children, and we look forward to working with her as an MP on this. π
π₯ Did you know that #WoodBurning releases tiny particles that get into our lungs & bloodstream, affecting families inside as well as neighbours outside?
The government is consulting on cutting emissions from domestic burning. Please respond by 19th March, and share far and wide! #CleanAirCrowd
A child wearing a breathing mask holds up a sign saying "Diesel makes kids sick".
Dieselgate should be history by now, yet it's an ongoing health scandal.
Between 2009 & 2024 excess diesel emissions caused a staggering:
π 16,000 premature deaths, &
π 30,000 cases of asthma in children.

Thank you @rupahuq.bsky.social for highlighting the ongoing #Dieselgate scandal today; we're glad our #Diesel research was helpful.
Good to hear @simonlightwood.org.uk confirm DfT will consider whether changes will be needed to policy framework & enforcement after the Pan-NOx litigation judgment.
