CS Ed Podcast, connecting with students, and a little AI - C’est la Z I listened to the latest episode of Kristen Stephen-Martinez's CS Ed Podcast. The episode focused on Professor Emeritus, William G. Griswold, of UCSD's practice of requiring students meet with him out...

My 12 year old lab may be in favor of tarriffs in this case.

Book cover of Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower.

Just finished Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower, taking it's name from Matthew 13:1-9. Many themes run through the book but the two that resonated most with me were the power and richness that comes with community, and the hope that young Lauren stubbornly holds on to.

N.K. Jemison's Broken Earth Trilogy.

N.K. Jemison's Broken Earth Trilogy.

Finished the Broken Earth trilogy by N.K. Jemison. I listened to the recordings while walking the dogs and I extended the walks to keep listening! Chance, Raven and I all enjoyed the series. So many of the themes seemed to apply to today, and the imperfect characters held my interest.

It may be too pollyanna-ish but I decided I would choose to make my little corner of the world better. So I went out and bought seeds for this year's vegetable garden.

I find that my dogs are good when I need a reset. Laid on the floor giving pets for an hour last night. Life was good until I tried to stand up! πŸ˜‚. Pro tip don’t lay on the floor too long after you hit 60.

Growing up in Iowa we would get the Gurney seed catalog. I think that was Indiana based and a quick search showed they still exist.

The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store by James McBride book cover.

The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store by James McBride book cover.

It's been awhile since I shed a tear at the end of a book. The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store is one that I can add to that list. A wonderful story of neighbors helping each other despite their differences. My favorite parts were the intertwined lives of the community residents.

Just finished Anne Lamott's Traveling Mercies. My last takeaway...when confronted with cruelty, "I knew on the beach that Jesus would have stepped in to save that dog, and he would have been loving the dog beater as he did so." We all need saving and love. #BookSky

Cover of the book Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson.

Just finished Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson. A good read as the rest of Sanderson's books. I like that it is part of the Cosmere universe but easily stands alone. A bit love story, a bit fantasy, and an interesting world to dive into. #BookSky

And this was what I am wondering about now. To make FamilySerach a source or to make Gelders Archief (Dutch ancestry) or to make a single record in the archive a source. So it sounds like the middle approach is good. General enough to have many citations in the source but not too general.

Looking for some #Genealogy help. Starting up again after a 20 year break. Using #RootsMagic for #GenealogySoftware. How do people use sources and citations with their family histories?

Day 5 - Advent of Code 2024

I just completed "Print Queue" - Day 5 - Advent of Code 2024 #AdventOfCode adventofcode.com/2024/day/5

Nailed part 1 but needed help on part 2 from the LLM. Learned about compare functions in Haskell to apply all of the rules.

Day 4 - Advent of Code 2024

I just completed "Ceres Search" - Day 4 - Advent of Code 2024 #AdventOfCode adventofcode.com/2024/day/4

Took a few days off. I'm not thinking functionally. Today's solution is basically C++ code translated into Haskell looking at row/col indices and the possible values.

Day 3 - Advent of Code 2024

I just completed "Mull It Over" - Day 3 - Advent of Code 2024 #AdventOfCode adventofcode.com/2024/day/3

Have done little to no regex combined with learning Haskell, so I gave up and relied on the LLM which patiently explained the generated code. Got the stars but I didn't earn them. :( Learning.

Very efficient solution!

I'm using AoC this year to learn Haskell (old dogs can learn new tricks). When I read adjacent levels need to differ by at least one -- I read that as no duplicates. My solution is very much a beginners effort!

I am a day behind but, I just completed "Red-Nosed Reports" - Day 2 - Advent of Code 2024 #AdventOfCode adventofcode.com/2024/day/2
Today's Haskell lesson, I learned about nub to remove duplicates which came in handy!
