Don't forget to Wash your Foreskin
all and all, this was my first time tackling a project at this scale. there are definitely things i wish i'd do differently, but overall i had fun with it. i want to start tackling more original music/albums next
add to that the fact that this is the ending track of the album, lol. all and all, i was pretty content with how the final version of this cover sounds.
14: Spiral of Ants
this was the second-two last song i finished for this album. i was so intimidated by this one because of all the weird sound design the original song had.
13: Man-Made Object
something something macarroni (lol)
the tricky part of this song was it's heavy use of pads, which takes up a lot of channel space in chiptune.
i ended up substituting it different kinds of arpeggios.
didn't help. (this song, and also that one scene from Back To The Future, were actually the earliest expossure of him to me as a kid). the ammount of seething and pure haterd in this song is so funny, i love it.
12: Raegenomics
again, since i was ESL, while i do catch some of the jokes, a lot of them tend to end up on the other end of the language barrier. this track COMPLETELY flew over my head when i was a kid. the fact that i also didn't know who Ronald Raegen was at the time probably (cont)
most of the tracks in Spirit Phone do use guitar, but i think this one is especially tricky. i honestly was doubting how i would do this song, but i think the result i get at the end came out rather nicely.
11: I Earn My Life
tooting my own horn here, but the transitional part at the beginning came out pretty decent with this one. i have a real pet-peeve with covering guitars in chiptune. theyre rally hard to get right. (cont)
no other artist would smear three lines of a middle age man balding back to back before absolutely losing it on his son.
10:As Your Father I Expressly Forbid It
since my english wasn't as good when i first listened to this album at 13 (my english is still not good), it never occured to me how funny some of the lyrics are in this album. both Neil's comedic writing AND compositional talent really shined in Spirit Phone
the original version i made was really poor, tho. the whole idea for this album actually stemmed from the desire to do this one track spesifically, lol. i wanted to see how much grew since i first started doing chiptune back in middle school.
09: Soft Fuzzy Man
i actually made an MMC5 version of this song when i was like, 13? i think??? i originally made it using Famitracker back when i was just starting to learn music. time really does pass by quickly, huh? (cont)
08: Ancient Aliens
hes really funny with his time signatures wow yeah. again i tried my best to capture the weird sounding synths Neil likes to use. the intro of the song is really fun to cover haha.
07: Eight Wonder
this is actually the second song i ever worked on for this album, i think? the toms in this one are actually using the MMC5's PCM instead of the 2A03's DPCM.
not only did i thought it would be like, really reallyyy funny, the sampled slap bass ended up complimenting the song a lot. this deffinitely one of my favorite tracks i worked on.
06: Sweet Bod
going into this album i knew i wanted to only use the MMC5's PCM channel sparingly. a rule of thumb i go by is that all of track from this album should be able to pass off as only using the regular MMC5 channel. the only exception to the rule is *this* song. (cont)
i could not manage to find the orignial laugh sample from the song, so i went up to Arthank and asked him if i could record him laughing. the sample in the final song is stretched, distorted, and bitcrushed to all hell, but somehow it does not compare to how creepy the laugh sounds irl.
05: When He Died
i really did not expect this song to be really fun to work on. espescially considering the length of the track. i tried my best including all the bells and whistles and nooks and crannies from this song, and i hope it's enough. (cont)
04: No Eyed Girl
i forgot who exactly, but a wise man once said, "every music is 4/4 unless you're a fucking nerd". or, something to the affect. like, i know i'm really bad at rhytm spesifically, but damn am i not able to tell this song's time signature :sobs:. the original project file is a mess.
there's nothing really anything to comment besides that, it's mostly just variations of the same meassure with different instruments.
03: Cabinet Man
a thing i really like in electronic music is when the song has an "8-bit section" where it's
a downgraded version of the song. i tried emulating this by mimicking the SEGA Master system
in the intro of the song. (cont)
so it was a nice excercise to get to know
the soundchip. dipping my toes wet or sumn i forgot how the saying goes. i had trouble
with a lot of the "speaking" parts, so 14.4Ml helped me out by giving her old VRC6 cover of
the song as refrence. big shoutouts to her, she's pretty cool
01: Livetime Acievement Award
this is the very first track i worked on for this album. i just knew i wanted to cover this
song first since it's my favorite from the original Spirit Phone. i was not really familiar
with the MMC5 at the time of arranging the song, (cont)
since this is finally out now (insert guy breaking free from his shackles image), i want to write up on each track i did for this, and my experience doing a full album for the first time. ๐งต
