I have never understood why people think politicians are there to inspire us and fill all the sad little empty holes in our lives. Of ALL the professions to choose for seeking that role (spoiler alert: NOBODY can do that for you!), that may be the wrongest.
Bring back civic minded voter mentality, do away with dead-eyed "break through my depression and make me feel something or else I blow this whole place and everyone in it sky high, you fucking fed!" voter mentality.

This didn't happen. The perception that it did is largely based on fictional shows that were about rich people. Much more common was a household where one person (theoretically Dad in a het household) was the higher earner and paid the housing costs and the other paid utilities & food

There are PLENTY of people in Kat's demographic who knew that Trump and the contemporary GOP are dangerous garbage.
Because I know how much good work Mike Simmons has done, for just another example. And he didn't have to wait till his college roommate challenged his life experiences to figure shit out.
It was just such cutesey-pootsy, giggle-giggle Mean Girl tagline. Accomplish ONE fucking thing of substance in your life and then come for someone like Schakowsky. Or almost any of the other IL-09 candidates, comes to that.
Because as someone who has had Jan as my Congressperson for over 25 years, I know very well that SHE doesn't suck. But some twentysomething whose greatest claim to fame is figuring out that Trump sucks during college and being sassy online should work harder to make the case for herself.
She's trotted out the tired-ass "establishment! AIPAC!" playbook when it's clear her problems are that she's just not connecting with enough people in the district. Maybe starting her campaign, when she thought Schakowsky was still her opponent, with "What if we didn't suck?" wasn't a good idea?
"I hate the gerontocracy!" OK, Amiwala is right there.
"I want more progressive leadership!" Again, she's progressive.
So it really seems like it's people hornswoggled by name recognition and celebrity.
Bushra has experience, she is young, she is at least as progressive on stated policy as Kat, and she knows the district. Yet somehow she's been overlooked.
Again I say: even if she's not someone's top choice: people erasing the existence of Bushra Amiwala-the daughter of immigrants who grew up in the district, is progressive, and the first Gen Z woman elected to public office-in favor of a media influencer/carpetbagger should explain WHY that's OK.
I was a teenager in 1980 when Reagan won the first time. I knew way back then that the GOP was on a trajectory of racism, favoring the wealthy over the middle-class and working class, etc. So if I knew that 46 fucking years ago, why would I be inclined to vote for someone stupider than me now?
And she's welcome to keep learning. She's NOT welcome to think she alone deserves grace and a seat in Congress after not showing any signs of putting in the actual work of gaining relevant experience, unlike Bushra Amiwala, Mike Simmons, Hoan Huynh. . .
