Scottish Horse troops passing by the Gate house in Birnam next to the Birnam Hotel. Lieutenant Colonel Stuart Fotheringham was leading the troops on the way to Bedford in 1915.
Having a bit of a freshen up! An unnamed gentleman painting the railings outside of the Free Church in Dunkeld (now home to Jeffreys Dunkeld and The United Lodge of Dunkeld No. 14).
This photograph is undated but was taken by James MacIntosh so will be between 1900 and 1920.
We have had an interesting week, from Karina the Barn Owl to new residents!

Scottish Horse Troops crossing Dunkeld's Telford bridge in 1907.
Training camps took place locally at Birnam and in Blair Atholl for the regiment during the interwar period.

St Mary's tower, Birnam was built in 1860 by the Architect John Carver for Lord and Lady Manners.
St Mary's tower was demolished in the 1960s. There are photographs available to view of its condition pre-demolition via this link - www.trove.scot/place/161704...

Dunkeld Cathedral street in 1939, the last Scottish Horse church parade before the outbreak of the second world war.
The photograph predates the national trust's Little Houses improvement scheme and shows a glimpse of Cathedral street's previous condition.

Troops of the 3/1st Scottish Horse in Louth, Lincolnshire in 1915 chopping hay for their horses using some rather intriguing looking machinery...
On this day 26 years ago (9th of February 2000) the first sod was cut for the extension at the Birnam Institute, now known as the Birnam Arts!

We are undertaking a National Lottery Heritage Funded project about 6 of the shops and businesses and 6 of the houses in the local area (Dunkeld). We are researching the history of the buildings and their residents.

3 Scottish Horse Troops photographed at the Golden Lion Ski Club in Plan De Gralba Italy in February 1946. The man standing alone has been named as Dick Jones.
Burn's night, the annual celebration of the life and works of Robert Burns, Scotland's national poet.
Burns once came to visit Niel Gow and they performed together in the Old Rectory at the top of Cathedral street, it is one of the few buildings which survived the Battle of Dunkeld in 1689.

Here we have the 2nd Squadron Scottish Horse Troops at Edinburgh Castle in January 1901 before leaving for South Africa.
The Chapter House Museum trust was created by the Friends of Dunkeld Cathedral, the Chapter House Museum was opened in 1994. Our organisation has grown since then, the Chapter house museum is still in place but we now also have a separate archive building and exhibition at 12 The Cross Dunkeld.
