Confocal micrograph of a mouse embryonic fibroblast with membrane labeled in blue, nuclei in yellow and cellular cytoplasm in red.
Happy #FluorescenceFriday! Here is a mouse fibroblast with multiple thin membrane extensions reaching out toward its neighbors. The long (>10 um) extensions are a type of signaling filopodia called #cytonemes that transport signals like SHH, WNT, Notch, and GFs! π¬ by Senior Scientist Hong Lin. π§ͺ π©βπ¬
graphical schematic of the meninges on top depicting the three layers [dura, arachnoid and pia] and other immune and vascular cell types. Inset shows Claudin-11 junction proteins connecting two sides of arachnoid barrier cells bottom schematic is the same but in inflammation with bacteria, junctions breakdown, depiction of cytokine release by vascular, meningeal and immune cells - at side of graphic is summary of defects we observe in infection: 'increased barrier permeability' 'mislocalization of Cldn11+ tight junction' 'BAM activation' and "increased inflammatory response'
π¨ New preprint from our lab led by Sophia Kim w/ @kellydoran.bsky.social group @cuanschutz.bsky.social -- using neonatal π model of bacterial meningitis β‘οΈ arachnoid barrier is leaky, Cldn11 junctions are disrupted & cytokines are part of the problem. Lots of π€©π§ π¦ π¬ & compelling data, check it out! 1/5

We used @hcrimaging.bsky.social to reveal interesting new features of #neuralcrest development in #xenopus - Thanks to @dev-journal.bsky.social for featuring it on the cover!

Up close and personal with a branching neurite in a DIV2 hippocampal neuron expressing FTractin-GFP. This was imaged every 6 seconds over 10 minutes on the trusty @zeiss-microscopy.bsky.social LSM880. Happy #FluorescenceFriday
Thatβs a Canadian passport. No good at Dunkinβ.
Yes, the BRC only got 250K from NS gov, but it was used to fund meetings (like the one this Friday), and importantly, KT micro grants to stimulate the transition of data to commercialization. We did a lot with that money.
Donβt forget to bring a your Bay leaves necklace to invigorate your protest. Stay safe!
The funding to the Brain Repair Centre was minuscule compare to the overall NS budget. But it stimulated the formation of new companies from local researchers, & provided research to provincial & federal govβts on neurodegenerative diseases & mental health. Devastating to our innovation economy.
Funding to Dalhousieβs Brain Repair Centre will be cutβa leading neuroscience research centre in the country with bio incubator partnerships. Graduate student scholarships have also been cut Incredibly disappointing & shortsighted move by the Nova Scotian government.
Completely foolish proposal to tax owners of electric and hybrid vehicles to generate 1.6 mil$ (?) in income. Thatβll fix maybe a couple of roads. How much did getting rid of bridge tollsβan efficient & targeted measureβcost just to win votes?
Looking forward to the Brain Repair Centre at Dalhousie University Research Day this Friday Feb 27. Special guests are Dr. Stephanie Borgland @borglandlab.bsky.social and Dr. Pete Chipman.

I see. Well enjoy the pretzels and show. I guess Iβll go back to work on my studentβs poster, reviews, protocol amendments, lecture materialβ¦and staying hungry for a delicious snack.
Hey Graham, you should bring me one of those to my office to get an independent opinion of how good they are!
Not everyone is happy with coming to the research building post-blizzard.
Completely idiotic proposal. Seems that this PV government has totally abandoned any semblance of environmental responsibility. They cut tolls on bridges to get elected and sticking to folks who are trying to reduce their carbon footprint by buying fuel efficient cars.
Yes, chili too.
I taste mild mint + broad leaf oregano + anise
Bay leaves are wonderful in roasts. So fragrant and interesting.
Is Bay Leaves a football team?
Just TP in this caseβ¦but I like your thinking.
Clearly you asking too much. University TP must remain super thin, nearly transparent, and have the effervescent quality of a dust moat floating on a sunbeam.
Hopefully the city snow plow doesnβt move it back to you driveway, as they tend do for our home. Happy snow day East Coasters!
Is that for that funny game where people are slipping in ice throwing stones and brooms at each other?

Well thatβs Phase II! If, and I say this hesitantly, weβre not in a simulation already. π
