My true advice here, would be communication- asking questions about what the client is looking for. Try telling them your interpretation of their character in your style. Bring up your influences with screen shots, etc before you draw for them. Time consuming, but it will prove effective longrun.

Room for "uglier" styles(aka not following the disney ratio) seems to have gotten smaller, and its soul crushing.
