Trump assaulted renewable energy. Now America is more vulnerable to Iran fossil fuel shocks Oil and gas prices are affected by global factors. Countries that invested in clean tech solutions are better positioned as the Middle East crisis escalates.

“The costs of Trump’s war to the average American will be higher than it could have been because of the assault of the GOP and Trump administration on renewable energy projects,” said Peter Gleick, a member of the US National Academy of Sciences

Black hole found that contains enough water to fill 'trillions of Earth-size oceans' APM 08279-5255 is a massive black hole (quasar) that contains about 140 trillion times the amount in all of Earth’s oceans

More evidence that water -- massive amounts of water -- have been present in the universe since shortly after the Big Bang.
All it took was hydrogen and oxygen, among the earliest elements created.

NSF Intent to Restructure Critical Weather Infrastructure

The US NSF has put out a "dear colleagues" letter that is essentially a yard sale list for @ncar-ucar.bsky.social

It asks questions such as, who'd like to take over some of NCAR's programs? Is anyone interested in commercial use of the Mesa Lab?

If you have thoughts, send them to NSF_NCAR@nsf.gov

Oyster farming along the Gulf Coast is becoming a big deal. Check out some of our School's interesting work on this topic 👇

It's a glimpse into how aquaculture can be altogether sustainable and profitable, while also contributing to valuable cultural and ecological resources. Neat stuff!

Reminder that one of the nine North American sturgeon species is only found in Alabama.

Sadly, that species is on the verge of complete extinction.

It is definitely the most imperilled of all these sturgeons.

CNN headline that says Trump delivers a deadly blow to EPA’s ability to regulate climate pollution

CNN headline that says Trump delivers a deadly blow to EPA’s ability to regulate climate pollution

The president is overruling science to eliminate measures that protect us from pollution and environmental damage, mainly to benefit multinational corporations that have thrown money at his campaign, ballroom, and family.

It's simple corruption, and it will cost American lives and livelihoods.

There is No Scientific Justification to Revoke the Endangerment Finding The U.S. EPA's decision to repeal the Endangerment Finding will limit the government's ability to regulate emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act.

As I say here, there is no scientific justification to revoke the engagement finding. In fact, over the last 15+ yrs, the evidence of how climate change affects our health has only grown. Higher risk of allergies, dementia, fertility, heart disease, and death: that’s what’s on the line. @nature.org

EPA repeals endangerment finding The move discards a scientific determination that empowered the government to limit climate pollution.

The evidence has not changed. Climate change has not stopped. This is political censorship of scientific evidence. Plain and simple.

THERE IS NO SCIENCE-AS-USUAL UNDER AUTHORITARIANISM.
"The new Nazi commissar wasted no time on the amenities. He immediately announced that Jews would be forbidden to enter university premises and would be dismissed without salary on March 15; this was something no one had thought possible despite the Nazis' loud anti-Semitism. Then he launched into a tirade of abuse, filth, and four-letter words such as had been heard rarely even in the barracks and never before in academia. He pointed his finger at one department chairman after another and said, "You either do what I tell you or we'll put you into a concentration camp." There was silence when he finished; everybody waited for the distinguished biochemist-physiologist. The great liberal got up, cleared his throat, and said, "Very interesting, Mr. Commissar, and in some respects very illuminating; but one point I didn't get too clearly. Will there be more money for research in physiology?"
The meeting broke up shortly thereafter with the commissar assuring the scholars that indeed there would be plenty of money for "racially pure science." A few of the professors had the courage to walk out with their Jewish colleagues, but most kept a safe distance from these men who only a few hours earlier had been their close friends. I went out sick unto death—and I knew that I was going to leave Germany within forty-eight hours."

This is why we say there can be no science-as-usual now. This passage is from Peter Drucker’s essay in the Atlantic about the crossroads that science stood at during Nazism. Science doesn’t just need funding — it needs the fundamental freedoms that come with democracy. Freedom of speech.
