Lawyers for Lord Mandelson have said his arrest was prompted by a "baseless" suggestion he was planning to leave the UK and move abroad.
The BBC understands Sir Lindsay Hoyle passed on information he received in the British Virgin Islands, on a visit last week, that Lord Mandelson was planning to travel there.
The Commons Speaker has confirmed he gave information about Lord Mandelson to the Metropolitan Police, after the peer's lawyers complained about the force's decision to arrest him on Monday.
