It was *refreshingly* mediocre. Again, like a film from the 80s or 90s, touching on some story beat stereotypes. Unlike some modern films, which can end up a narrative and thematic mess.
It could have have been genuinely good with some added gay!
The film was apparently, in part, inspired by the original gay director's own childhood.
By removing "the gay" you remove so much. Relatability, personality, artistry.
It's a tragedy how they're butchering art to avoid triggering right-wing conservatives. Just look at Hoppers and Inside Out 2.
I liked Elio a lot. It felt like an 80s, 90s era kids adventure film. But it did feel like it was lacking that bit of something to truly come together and be magical.
