Cropped portion of one of the images available through the above links. Depicts Sasha, a young witch with blue hair and the protagonist of adult isekai sandbox monsterfucking visual novel Monstrous Liberation, almost completely naked standing on a lecture hall stage. Sasha is looking down in confusion at a huge magic hand that has just poofed into existence to seize her lower torso as one might seize a burrito.
Wizardly shenanigans continue in this week's subscriber sneak peek of an upcoming Monstrous Liberation scene! God I love it when I get to emphasize how onahole-coded Sasha is

Either's good as long as everything you post oozes contempt for the people who use the website! Don't be afraid to feel things out for a bit, I know stepping into a new role can be daunting.

Welcome, Josh! Just so everyone's on the same page, does this mean that ALL embarrassing staff crashouts will be funnelled through you going forward, or are you going to mainly be providing support for your coworkers during THEIR ill-advised public crashouts?

Face What's Coming To You, MR. BITCH
Mr. Bitch is cowering beneath the windowsill of a first-floor apartment building, peering fearfully out into the street. A woman, her child, and a black dog are already outside, staring into the camera.

All of which is to say, asking the questions that the quoted post is asking somewhat sardonically is, actually, part of the job of the critic. You do actually have to synthesize the context in which a work appears with your empirical evaluation of its strengths & flaws

It's not a critic's job to be a cheerleader, but a critic is supposed to be a passionate student of an artform with a strong depth of knowledge about the history, cultural context, and contemporaries of an example of said artform & must consider those things when creating criticism

Looking at it from a different POV, I think it's incumbent on the critic to recognize when reasonable responses to criticism are going to be "that isn't what we were trying to do", "that's beyond our team's ability", and/or "we can't afford to do that"

"Good Enough" is itself an fairly glib descriptor; my take is that in order to bear the weight (and it IS a weight) of genuine critical analysis, a game needs to clear a certain threshold of artistic intent, technical expertise, and overall resources

I actually engage with this question directly at the top of my 2024 essay "Good Enough To Criticize", specifically because in the back half I'm asking fairly pointed critical questions about a small-ish porn game

The AAA4 fundraiser went from $1113 to $1288 in one day! That means we only have $112 left to reach our goal! That means we could hit 100% TODAY if a few more people give us their support! We're so close! Please chip in if you can!

Miyamoto's point becomes especially obvious in context: he and Itou are discussing the limitations of what an audience in 1989 expects from games. In context, the comparison to another artform often guilty of leaning on formulaic escalation to retain audiences is perfectly salient!

Oh yeah, the sublime inarguably lives in the grotesque as well. It's just that grotesquery for its own sake isn't enough, it has to be paired with real consideration - you've got to SELL me on the seductive properties of the grotesque, not take them as self-evident

There are one thousand billion different ways to make vanilla sex interesting and we're still inventing more. The point that's being made is that reliance on a single ever-escalating easy recipe for dopamine hits is creatively stultifying. I'm understand disliking Nintendo but 1989 Miyamoto is right

I saw someone making fun of this quote by saying that Miyamoto is advocating for "making vanilla sex more interesting" as if the idea that vanilla sex can be interesting was laughable. You imbecile. You buffoon. If you can't imagine interesting vanilla sex you don't deserve to be a pornographer

For a lot of porn consumers, that escalation is something they're perfectly happy with, but more often than not it signals to me that a person or group is out of new ideas; I get bored and move on. It feels like Miyamoto's responding to something similar here (again, in 1989)

I look at/watch/play/read a lot of porn (surprise!) and a recurrent phenomenon I observe IS creators or even whole subcultures becoming fixated on a rote set of signifiers, where the only perceived way to create works that feel "new" is to escalate said signifiers rather than mixing it up

Miyamoto: When pornography escalates, it eventually crosses into the grotesque. I think the world of "hidden secrets" in games has almost reached that same grotesque level. It's reached a point where it isn't measured by common sense anymore. It's just people getting bored and looking for stronger & stronger stimulation. We've hit a wall. When you're at the point where you have no choice but to ho "grotesque", you have to start thinking of new ways to use the medium.
I truly don't think it's good practice to try and extrapolate an overarching career philosophy from a single remark made in an interview 37 actual years ago. That said I do see where Miyamoto's coming from here & think the porn comparison is apt
