Yeah, Fateful Findings is the author-turned-magic-hacker one. Even though his first one, Double Down, is the most impressive to me because he shot it on 35mm film, Fateful Findings has the most Breen Acting in it, so it's probably the best choice for newcomers.

Yeah, apparently the studio just cut stuff out, for no real reason. Clive Barker describes the cut content as "connective tissue." Stuff that connects the scenes better and some conversations that add to the characters, so it's a subtle improvement.

Yes! I'm always telling people this! Highly recommend the Director's Cut if you can get it.
