All my life I have studied democratization and autocratization. My 1st field trip was to newly democratic Argentina. I then added autocracies to my portfolio: Cuba, Ven, etc. I think I can recognize the stages of transition to authoritarianism. Here are the boxes Trump has already checked off.
And perhaps without even knowing it, he is paving the way for his own ouster
I know people like comparing Trump to Putin, but this chaotic rule by decree while state capacity declines and the opposition increasingly views him as unfit to govern is much more reminiscent of Yeltsin's first term.
A must read for those interested in Ecuador's presidential election:

Right-wing populism meets left-wing populism.
The US just slapped a 25% tariff on Colombia for refusing to receive deportees on military planes. This is just the start.

My favorite part of Zuckerberg's Joe Rogan interview is when he suggests there is not enough masculine energy at his company, where two out of every three employees is a man.

👇 The first review of my book is just out in Party Politics! Thanks, @philippkoeker.bsky.social, for such a thorough assessment.
Beyond explaining presidential survival and instability, this combination of party-related attributes could also apply to different levels of governance. @stanfordpress.bsky.social From my latest book "Why Presidents Fail"

Una breve nota que me hizo El Mercurio en su cuerpo de Reportajes. Una conclusión pesimista del libro es que las crisis de gobierno debieran aumentar en frecuencia e intensidad #whypresidentsfail

My advice to starting PhD students: Tackle big questions, because testing hypotheses is like checking your luggage—it’s necessary, but it’s not why you booked the trip #phdlife #gradschool #PhDadvice #gradstudent
CNN Chile: Manuel Monsalve se desmaya durante lectura de medidas cautelares en su contra t.co/yoHdAmYymE
I agree. Though, there are always incentives for opposition legislators to file impeachment requests against a sitting president. My guess is that Democrats are still groggi because of such an electoral loss
CNN chart large differences in public support for mass deportation, depending on how the question is asked in surveys.
You probably already know that question wording matters a lot in polling. But this chart from @aedwardslevy.bsky.social at @cnn.com underscores the point: Public support for mass deportation varies from 62% to 33%, depending on how the question is asked. www.cnn.com/2024/11/17/p...

I like how Uruguay's former president expresses his kinda furstration with the changes he couldn't materialize: "I dedicated myself to changing the world and I didn't change a damn thing, but I was entertained"
