New episode of TMR on THE TUNNEL by William H. Gass is now out! We talk about the “Susu, I Approach You in My Dreams,” arguably the most MAGA section yet. (It’s pretty scary.)

Trump giving out $1,776 checks has the same energy as your weed shop advertising a $4.20 discount on prerolls.
Kicking off a deep dive into @openletterbooks.bsky.social’s backlist with this post about publishing strategies, looking at backlist trends, and Ingrid Winterbach’s TO HELL WITH CRONJÉ.

Episode 47: Elon Musk
Walter Isaacson’s definitive biography poses the question: is it ok to be a pathetic, cruel, lying reactionary if it kind of helps you build cars?
Great chat with @chadwpost.bsky.social about this book and its author. And what to do with artists that do terrible things. And the time I conned my way into meeting Jeanette Winterson. dalkeyarchive.substack.com/p/the-ikon-m...
Ha! Love it!!
Talked with @chadwpost.bsky.social about Andrew Elias Colarusso's novel THE SOVEREIGN! dalkeyarchive.substack.com/p/the-sovere...
Literally who I was thinking of!
It's a thrill and an honour to be on this list!
The kicker to this whole thing was when I was in Barcelona for the first time and found Flann O’Brien’s pub. I went to eat there (obviously) and THIS EPISODE OF LOST was on TV. I showed the bartender the book (I had it with me) and they comped me everything and gave me a Flann O’Brien’s polo.
Hahah. That whole experience (which I’ll write about soon) was totally wild. It’s in episode 3, which, at the time, aired in the UK months after it did in the US. This spawned a bizarre feedback loop of UK press reference US press then US press referencing the new UK press . . .

An excellent profile here of @openletterbooks.bsky.social and @chadwpost.bsky.social.
“Without Open Letter you wouldn’t have the contemporary translation scene; it’s been landscape-defining.”

I feel ya. That section was weird, but then the Herb Doctor appeared! And I think this week’s section—with some footnote guidance?—is truly incredible and brought it all home for me.
I had a similar experience! And as a lifelong footnote hater . . . I have to admit that I’d be floundering without these. I’m curious which other editions have fantastic footnotes.
Episode 3 on CONFIDENCE-MAN (“You Are a Punster”) is now up on YouTube. It’ll be available from all the various podcast hosting places tomorrow. If you’re at all lost in this book—tune in! This ep really frames things that would otherwise go unnoticed. www.rochester.edu/College/tran...
It’s great!

This book looks so right up my alley.
And finally, I posted a piece on Dalkey Essentials and Eimar O’Duffy (mostly forgotten Irish satirist) and parody. Took me MONTHS to finally get this down. So much struggle and procrastination . . .
