Column idea: the old trope that literary land hates genre is no longer true, if it ever was. Clarkesworld is at #awp26, and romance, and other genres, as dedicated presses and included in many of the lit publishers. It’s the other way around: genre/commercial seems to reflexively deride literary.
Argh, book contracts and literary estates at the same time? #awp26, you’re killing me.

I turned a corner at #awp26 and there is Roxane Gay, whose book Hunger reduced me to tears last week - and I do not cry at books. I am coldhearted and immovable except when I read her. I snagged her new book & I’m fairly sure I goobered like a fangirl, because she’s who I want to be when I grow up.

Writerfolk: An acquaintance got an auto-reject on a story 5 minutes after submission from an AI screener full of nonsense. I commiserated and got a lecture that all major publishers are using AI for slush so we should get used to it. Smells fishy to me (esp. since Big Five prefer agents). Thoughts?

I am on such a teacher high. Today was poetry open mic for my creative writing students, and they SO got into it. Everything from current song lyrics to Shakespeare, reading aloud on the quad, and I taught them the snaps. By the end they were asking to do this again. I love this job.
