European rail operators introduce common definition for a bicycle on international train services
From 14 December 2025, all European rail operators will apply one common standard definition for what constitutes a “regular, assembled bicycle” on international train services.
This means that any restrictions based on size or weight will disappear.

Cycling strong component in Dutch €2.5 billion fund to access new housing
Cycling strong component in Dutch €2.5 billion fund to access new housing
When it comes to finding creative solutions and new approaches to cycling policies, the Dutch often have shown us the way.
This might be another such example: integrating cycling into (affordable) housing programmes.

People riding bikes in a downtown Vancouver separated bike-lane
It’s really important that #Vancouver’s Downtown Business Association, who were originally against bike-lanes, are now among their most vigourous supporters, because of ACTUAL EVIDENCE that they’re better for downtown business than any street parking they replaced.
Safe bike-lanes mean business.

Excellent speech by French MEP @francoiskalfon.bsky.social at the CIE/ Conebi #Cycling Summit. The 2024 EU Cycling Declaration now needs to find its way into legal texts, on leasing, MFF, CEF, Social Climate Fund, etc. Fully agree.

The map below shows how EU Member States have incorporated cycling policies into their final National Energy and Climate Plans. Anything between 'excellent' and 'insufficient', so it seems, based on 13 cycling indicators.

I am very happy to have played a part in this.
But: Quite a few rail operators in the EU still refuse the carriage of non-dismantled bicycles. Interested to hear which ones?
Stay tuned for the launch of @ecf.com 'Cyclists Love Trains' report on Tuesday, 10 June at @velo-city-conference.com.

How a scientist who studies ‘super agers’ exercises for a longer life
Cardiologist Eric Topol, 70, spent years researching healthy aging. Now, he lives by what he’s learned.
"But if there is one thing that has the most exceptional evidence for healthy aging, it’s exercise."
It doesn’t have to be cycling—but cycling is a great way to build physical activity into your daily routine.

Radverkehrsbeauftrage abgeschafft / ADFC: Fahrradland zur Chefsache machen
In der neuen Bundesregierung soll die Position des Radverkehrsbeauftragten eingespart werden. Der ADFC hält das für einen herben Verlust.
Really bad start of the new German government on transport policies: the position of National Cycling Officer, created in 2013 to be the public face on all things cycling, was abolished. ECF's German member @adfc.de heavily criticizes this move.

Why Europe is going ‘car free’
At a time when NYC and the Trump administration are battling over a congestion pricing program, Europe is dramatically scaling back its relationship with cars.
Here at ecf.com, we work to encourage more people cycling more often in Europe.
While this doesn't mean entirely 'car-free,' every car removed from our cities and replaced with someone walking or cycling a blessing. So many great cities are leading the way!

Cars are getting 1cm wider every two years. That may not sound much, but over time it adds up, and they're showing no signs of slowing down 😬
That's #carspreading. Our new campaign is calling on city leaders to make parking policies fairer by varying costs based on the size of a car.
