Nurul Amin Shah Alam, 56, had been held in the Erie County Holding Center on local charges and was freed on bail February 19. Because of an immigration detainer, Border Patrol picked him up — but instead of transferring him or notifying his family, agents left him at a Tim Hortons five miles from home. He disappeared that night. Police say the medical examiner ruled the death health-related, not homicide or exposure, but detectives are investigating the circumstances following his release.
