This is a climate science story, but it's also an economics, security, and everything else besides story.
It takes a staggering lack of imagination not to think through the implications of temperatures spiralling upwards even faster than previously thought.

The remarkable thing about Pedro Sรกnchez is that he has faced everything modern European politics has to throw at a government - the scars of the eurozone crisis, a polarised and fragmented politics, snobbery from other Europeans - and built the most successful economy and foreign policy in Europe.
Fascinating to watch ๐ซ๐ท, then ๐ฌ๐ง, then ๐ฎ๐น, now ๐ฉ๐ช start to acknowledge what ๐ช๐ธ's government recognised from the very start: the Trump-Netanyahu war on Iran is a reckless intervention conducted without regard for rules of war and without a strategy for what comes next.

Meanwhile, Spain's massive investment in renewables is paying dividends now: with prices for Spanish industry and consumers low and stable compared with other European economies.

Alongside many other things, these kind of tactics from the Telegraph et al are just so excruciatingly, exquisitely embarrassing. The people involved must recognise how pathetic it is, even as they ratchet up their contempt for their audience by a couple more notches.

Conservatives that are suddenly so gung ho about raising defence spending should follow their logic through and commit to cutting pensions to fund this.
Waiting to hear this principled view get voiced by the opposition.

Make yourself feel slightly better, or at least differently depressed, about bleak global news by reminding yourself that Kemi Badenoch thinks the *only* reason Keir Starmer could possibly have had any concerns about this war is his electoral dependency on British Muslims.
Some thoughts on how the financial and security case for clean technologies really has just got even better, albeit in the most horrendous of circumstances.

Global macro types: mostly relatively calm and expecting this to all blow over.

Deluded. Labour lost about ten points during the course of the 2024 campaign. A strategic triumph it was not.
It would be progressive, it should stop energy bills rising as a result of Trump's war, and it would reduce the differential between gas and electricity prices making heat pumps and EVs even more financially attractive.
The next few weeks is going to see an avalanche of calls for the Treasury to do what it should have done long ago and move policy costs off electricity bills and into general taxation. www.theguardian.com/money/2026/m...
NEW ANALYSIS: UK emissions fell 2.4% in 2025 as coal fell to a 400-year low. Incredibly, we used less coal last year than than in 1600, when Queen Elizabeth I was on the throne and Shakespeare was writing Hamlet.
