You do realise the irony of using 'bomb throwers' when complaining about polarising language?

For now I don't really see a need for it, as the full text search works pretty well, but I can see how it could reach its limits as the database grows. Let's hope we don't need to rely on AI to deal with a database full of AI-generated papers...
I agree with that statement. We will have to wait and see how it is actually implemented before we can judge. The folks at SAO have been doing a fantastic job with ADS so far.
Our university-hosted AI-based search tool had the audacity to suggest "consider also searching for Johannes Hartke" when it could not find any of my papers. This is after a decade of mostly publishing as "J Hartke" for a reason...
Great news from my former home! I wish something like this could be considered in city centres in Finland, too. But car-centric Turku could never...
Students have access to these tools and it's important to properly guide them on their use (or avoidance).
I am glad I participated in this workshop on using these tools though (facilitated by the @utu.fi library and @tcsmtutu.bsky.social), as it made me even more aware of the biases and pitfalls of AI-based literature research.
At least when I finally found one of my papers to benchmark how much it is getting right about its content, it did not do too poorly. But for now, back to the ADS.
- and then my un-favourite, suggesting to search for Johannes Hartke rather than J Hartke
- not being able to search by author: "I could not find any publications by Hartke on extragalactic planetary nebulae"; well RIP to 10 years of my contributions to the field
Highlights from the 'conversation':
- coming up with a fake reference to Springer for a paper that I am very sure I published in A&A back in the day
Wild ride trying out different AI-based literature research tools endorsed by our university library. So glad the astro community has been blessed with the ADS for decades and hoping that it'll remain free from hallucinating AI-bots for the foreseeable future. π

1/ Happy International Day of #WomenAndGirlsInScience!

AES Andes announced that it will step back from the project INNA, planned near our Paranal Observatory.
We welcome this and expect the project to be withdrawn from Chile's Environmental Assessment Service soon, which would formally confirm the cancelation: https://www.eso.org/public/news/eso2602

An image of a spiral galaxy, showing only the light from specific gasses within, looking like much of the galaxy has been replaced with empty space and only an outline remains. This outline is composed of specks of different coloured light, with a cone of white-ish light at the centre. Nearby the dots are a warm orange, replaced with pink light as you get to the edges of the grand spiral.
Dive into this ultra-detailed image of the Sculptor Galaxy!
Based on observations made with our VLT, it was created by stitching together over 100 exposures, covering an area about 65 000 light-years wide.

Speaking as a scientist who studies the cosmos but whoβs never been that interested in doing it with telescopes, itβs both humbling and awe-inspiring to get out and truly see the full night sky with your own two eyes in an area without light pollution. Weβre losing something thatβs invaluable.
