Want to stop disastrous cuts to BART, Caltrain, Muni and AC Transit while also improving transit throughout the Big 5 Bay Area Counties? Come out Friday!

BREAKING: The Governor signed our legislation to authorize a Bay Area regional funding ballot measure for transit.
SB 63 is critical to avoid massive service cuts at Muni, BART, Caltrain & other systems. We need to stabilize & modernize these systems for the Bay Areaβs future.
This TCRP was process focused, but may be of interest

Great news! Thanks for your leadership Senators @scottwiener.bsky.social and Jesse ArreguΓn
βThe MTA as a whole is averaging 448K more public transit riders per day this yearβ¦The MTA ridership growth since congestion pricing went into effect is almost 50% larger than the total ridership of Americaβs next-largest subway system.β bettercities.substack.com/p/congestion...
Muni has a new leader as it faces a fiscal crisis, service cuts

Congrats to Julie!
NEW SHIFT KEY
Senator Brian Schatz (D-HI) has emerged as an early leader of the anti-Trump 2.0 opposition. Heβs also a longtime observer of climate politics.
He joins us to talk about how Dems plan to fight back and what climate advocates and clean energy firms need to do for the next four years:
It's been 3 weeks since Congestion Relief Zone tolling went into effect, and the program is working!
We're seeing traffic move quicker into and within Manhattan, which benefits all New Yorkersβdrivers, bus riders, emergency vehicle operators, pedestrians, and more.
πJanuary ridership is already up year over year! This week weβve seen at least 10k-24k extra trips each day.
Tues β¬οΈ 24k (185k trips)
Wed β¬οΈ 14k (183k trips)
Thurs β¬οΈ 11k (181k trips)
Fri β¬οΈ 10k (140k trips)
π¨What the β¦ BART train screens just got a sick little update?!β¬οΈ
The Passenger Information System on BARTβs train cars is being updated to show major transit transfer connections at stations as part of a larger effort to make it easier for riders to navigate the Bay Areaβs transit systems.
The time it took to cross bridges and tunnels into Manhattan last week between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. was shorter on average than in January 2024
βThe data seemed to confirm what some New Yorkers have said they have already noticed: fewer traffic jams, less honking and more curbside parking on some blocks in and near the congestion pricing zone.β
#DecongestionPricing works!π

The passing of President Carter should give us a moment to reflect on the nature of public service, far beyond terms in elected office.
A reflection, too, of a kind of politics we left behind a long time ago.
And here's the messy map of country growth over the last four years! I like how clear you can see the boom in certain states like Florida, Texas, and Utah.
I've got a lot more state and region level maps coming later today, so stay tuned
In 2023, ALL of America's largest metro areas saw positive economic growth!
The fastest growers were OKC (+6.9%), Seattle (+6.2%), Houston (+5.4%), New Orleans (+5%), and Charlotte (+4.7%)
Today we got new GDP by Metro area data, so here's a thread breaking down the numbers by state/region!
Starting with California, where there's been a partial rebound in the Bay Area tech hubs while SoCal growth heavily trails the national & state average.π§΅
A map of GDP growth by state since Q3 2019
Every state except one (North Dakota) has now seen their GDP recover or exceed pre-COVID levels!
Fastest: Florida (23.5%), Idaho (23%), Utah (21.8%), Arizona (19.9%), Texas (19.5%)
Slowest: North Dakota (-0.2%), Hawaii (1.7%), Alaska (3.5%), Louisiana (3.8%), Illinois (3.9%)
As I've been saying: Rise in RTO mandates is a sign that the labor market is softening. RTO is effectively a backdoor pay cut, which firms would not do unless they thought workers had less bargaining power (and/or are trying to reduce headcount)

BART and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission unveiled new test maps and signs at El Cerrito del Norte Station.
They are designed to make transit journeys easier to understand riders by delivering clear, predictable, and familiar info across service areas and county lines.

For five years, through a global pandemic and financial crisis, I've served the most amazing team, in the city I love most in all the world. We accomplished more than I dreamt possible. I'll be stepping down Dec 31 at the end of my contract

Exactly one week from today is the release of the BEA's GDP by metro area data for 2023, something I am unironically super excited for because it means I get to update my favorite map collection:

As neighborhoods grow wealthier, transit ridership drops.
In Southern California, "a one-standard deviation increase in median rent is associated with 22% fewer neighborhood transit boardings."
