SPRIGHTLY!
I mean it's a rant I have in an interview. I loved it but it was too long to post.
Someone did write black and tans about minneapolis. I'm sure it's good. :)
Β‘viva la quinta brigada!
they also pretty much ignored our book
This explains why UK news outlets pretty much ignored our recent work showing that there's continuous movement from all over the place into/around Britain during the period because it's counter to these anti-immigrant arguments.
Here is the show, written about in this excellent piece.

βTo believe in laws over belief in people is to be colonized.β
Tiocfaidh Γ‘r lΓ‘!
Our day will come!
Β‘No pasarΓ‘n!
They shall not pass!
I will!
βPressβ β¦ iβm not really taking the day off. Iβm just taking PTO from one job to do my other job. And writing about my third job.
Taking the day off and going to a bunch of rock music shows today. I feel young again. Like Im 47!
Reading @lollardfish.bsky.social latest in the strib about Irish music, got me thinking: What if it happens on St Patrick:s Day? how fucking beautiful that would be
βVikings, Rus, Magyars, Muslims, Picts, Saxons, Anglesβ is a hell of a list. Wrong in so many ways.
Nothing problematic here!
History is just about how evildoers toppled those great empires, clearly
ALSO: one of the points @profgabriele.com makes every time we talk about Oathbreakers is the rhetorical work Charlemagne as βgoodβ does in this narrative. You can see it perfectly in this review.
Empire = good. Now why would a white British historian think such a thing?
There are a lot of people using dark ages/fall of Rome narratives to support anti-immigrant movements today. Which does seem to push historians to do more rather than less.
CLE has a long tradition of celebrating our large Irish community. As some have become more conservative, everyone should read this. As we celebrate and listen to the music this St. Patrick's Day, really listen to it. And act accordingly. The occupation may be coming for our neighbors here as well.
Iβd like people to notice is how the reviewer and the introduction uses a multi-century movement of peoples to support todayβs anti-immigrant argument in Britain.
However you characterize movement from 200-600, it ainβt anything like anything modern. Because FOUR HUNDRED YEARS
idk how to fix this issue bc i think we've all participated and it is *really* hard when we're also all mentally exhausted and furious, but we gotta stop rewarding these assholes with our attention in an attention economy π (not to say we ignore it, but, just like... not giving them hate-reads)
"But maybe just this once, listen to the lyrics, too, and let this St. Patrickβs Day be a holiday about fighting back."
I wrote something
Wow, I never knew David Perry played Irish music too! Great article
as an Irish Jew in America, from the north east but via nashville and now in the upper midwest, I have a lot of thoughts about diaspora and culture.
it is a complex but broadly true pattern among many ... with variations that matter a lot.
anyway I blocked the irish guy mad at me for talking about irish-american traditions, and that's fine. but I wanted to just note this.
stakes vary, perspectives vary, family histories vary. But one isn't more "true" than the other. That's not how diaspora works.
the thing about being part of a diaspora is that your culture is formed around diaspora and people who didn't leave may not share it, even if diaspora culture is a lot about the place from which you left.
At this time, I am speaking of Irish and Irish-American.
My wife is conducting research for a workshop about those of you who like to thrift/shop for vintage clothing. She needs to get 100 people in her dataset, and I would appreciate it if you would take 5 minutes to fill our her survey! Pass it on to your friends who love vintage!
