Took a staff field trip this past week to Drewry’s Bluff on the James River to see the site of the US Navy’s attempt to reach Richmond with the ironclads Monitor, Galena, and Naugatuck in 1862. Confederate artillery on the bluff at Fort Darling (earthworks still visible) stopped the Union flotilla.
James “Jim” Lovell, the former NASA astronaut renowned for his heroic leadership during the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission, has passed away at the age of 97.
