throw tech journalism in the river, and if it tries to climb back out, shoot it
I love candy that tastes like other candy... it's like you're having one candy, but you're actually having another candy
me after writing five words
We've got Epic Space vibes with the soundtrack to @brunodias.bsky.social Voyageur! This was the first ever soundtrack I wrote and produced and it's still one of my favorites. I hope I get to do something in this mode again someday!

Screenshot from VOY s5e13 "Gravity". Tuvok is giving a woman a mind meld. There is absolutely no reason for it either, he just felt like it.
THE MAN JUST LOVES TO MIND MELD!
Great question – in fact all future crashouts will be handled by a Claude agent prompted for this purpose.
ha ha we have fun here but in all seriousness actually bluesky PRs are written by claude. they're all-in on claude over at bluesky hq. claudophiles, you might say
jokes aside I'm glad jay finally found someone she trusts to prompt chatgpt to write her press releases
can't believe this is how I find out I didn't get the job
idk how they're gonna keep topping this. tanker car full of molasses derailment. guy fell into a man-sized spiralizer. cruise ship full of british tourists (go with it) with a mass outbreak of something they can only describe as "the lurgy"
again the pitt remains masterful at ensuring you come back for the next episode. "mass casualty waterslide collapse". I am creating a calendar event as we speak
A 3x3 grid showing Sid Meier's Pirates!, Anchorhead, IMMORTALITY, Starfleet Command 2: Orion Pirates, Hollow Knight: Silksong, Dishonored, Baldur's Gate 2, Return of the Obra Dinn, and Crusader Kings 2
Fine, I'll bite. What are "video games"
I get that it can feel bad to think you're being tarred with a broad brush because of other people's evil – I had a public-facing job on a F2P video game for five years, believe me I fucking know – but you do have to exist in the social context you live in!
Given this social context, is it any wonder that making grand pronouncements about how the era of claude doing your job for you is here gets you a negative response? I know you don't read your own PRs any more, maybe that frees up time to read the room.
At the same time, LLMs are demonstrably incredibly harmful across multiple vectors. You can point to examples close to home (slop code pull request spam), to widespread abuse (synthetic nudes and degrading imagery), or to more out-there cases like chatbot suicide bait.
The truth is that software ate the world and people are not enjoying being digested. As a class, people who make software have facilitated two decades of mounting atrocities against people's privacy, safety, and sanity. They were also on the vanguard of multiple stupid and harmful fads.
Intellectually, I don't foreclose the possibility that LLM code generation has utility! But... 1. people are making hysterically grand claims about it, 2. software engineers have become catastrophically tone-deaf about the externalities of the tech and the low credibility of their profession
Then maybe vibe coders could hold off on the grandiose claims until *after* they can show results? The point is not to declare anything with certainty, it's to point out the gap between what the techbros are saying and what they're shipping.
Sorry (not sorry) to keep harping on this but cashtags really are a case study of bad product management. It's a feature that is 1. a bad idea in general, 2. seeing little use anyway, 3. signals unpleasant things about your priorities and goals. But also it was shipped in a broken state.
They want you to be impressed by their massive intellect even though what they're serving up as the fruits of Claude's mighty loins is, you know, fuckin cashtags
LLMs are going to 10x the price of RAM, is Claude at least going to fix the fact that every desktop app is now a full fat install of Chrome that leaks memory like a stuck pig?
Obviously LLMs don't seem to have created a massive capacity to refactor and re-architect the system that would enable, eg, locked accounts. But also even trivial shit continues to languish. The Bluesky iOS app still renders letterboxed on ipads.
Ex-programmers like Bluesky's tech team will insist strenuously that Everything Has Changed and react to skepticism with hostility and insults, while still completely failing to deliver anything close to a revolution to users.
Part of the disconnect is of course that techbros insist that a total revolution in the way that software is made is taking place, but anyone who uses software can observe that software continues to suck more than ever before
Tom Paris talking to captain Janeway: "You can always uncork the pheromones."
"Now, whenever he gets a whiff, he's under her spell."
the truth of it is, of course, that on the balance of universal utility a year's worth of the total life output of every bluesky team members does not beat one (1) drawing of rouge the bat wider than she is tall
it's just insanely funny that because they stupidly built their stupid little protocol in a way that precluded locked accounts, they're all on main talking like this. although I personally don't think you should refer to your users as "screechers" and "gooners" even in private.
they hate their userbase so much it's unreal
