By no means a new article, but a great read nonetheless. A thoughtful dive into questions about the role of nature vs. human intervention in cider/wine production, and why โnature vs. human interventionโ is itself an unhelpful false dichotomy.
Hey thanks for sharing this link! I always enjoy your blogs, so I look forward to giving this a read.
Thanks for the input! Iโm new to grafting, so a bit worried Iโll botch these tender friendsโฆbut there is a workshop next month, so hopefully a bit of expert guidance will help. ๐
Three small twigs of scion wood cut from an overgrown apple tree
Returned to the wild highway apples to try and collect scionsโฆthis was the absolute best I could get. Is this anything? Theyโre a bit shrimpyโฆ๐ฉ
Cover of an antique book called โThe Old Cider Millโ by James Arthur Lodge. The cover is dark sage green with white and coral orange accents.

Found this very cool book from 1906 at my fave antique book store a couple of weeks ago ๐ค
DID YOU KNOW?
If you have Delta Sky Miles, you can donate them to help a kidnapped-and-released person fly home!
They are set free on the streets of El Paso or another Texas town with no phone, no money, nothing at all. Your miles can get them back to their loved ones!
This whole thread is highly worth the read.

Flawless use of that Bilbo quote 10/10 no notes
The debut came nearly 30 years after the variety sprang from the Washington State University's Columbia View Research Orchard.
I keep thinking โmy god the people theyโve killed seem like exceptionally good folksโ and I think the lesson there is that theyโre not exceptional, but that wonderful people abound and that a baseline distrust in humanity is a shitty conservative trope that privileges power over collective strength
Wassail: a cider-soaked tradition to wake up the orchard and welcome a good harvest.
Honestly, helping to edit Wikipedia feels like one more small way to fight the enshittification of everything. Worth considering.
I had been wondering about this recently!
Several men with lanterns and cider are gathered around an apple tree on a winter night. They appear to be toasting to the tree with their glasses raised.

Although the total amount of cultivated farmland in Oregon is shrinking, filbert acreage is booming.
Well this is certainly getting ahead of myself by a year or fiveโฆbut if I manage to successfully graft and propagate it, Iโd be happy to share scion wood! ๐
Such discoveries feel like magic! I couldnโt see an obvious graft union, and it has a lot of trunks, so I suspect itโs a seedling, but Iโm still planning to have it DNA tested. ๐
Absolutely! Just gotta wait for the leaves to come back in a few months. But we are definitely going to have it tested!
Three medium-small yellow apples mottled with red and orange blotches, and a hint of russeting
One of the most delicious apples I tasted all year came off a tree growing feral off the side of the highway, between the railroad tracks and a car dealership. Iโll be heading back in a few weeks to cut some scion wood because these amazing apples deserve to continue on and be appreciated!
I picked up 16 new varieties at a local orchard yesterday! Absolutely enchanting time of year ๐๐๐
This video from @hankgreen.bsky.social is a great metaphor and description of what I think has happened to the Internet, and our overall "consumption" of information, no matter how nutritious or empty the calories of information we consume are.

Some things to keep in mind as movements get built locally.....
Iโll always show up for Renaissance slander.
A tricky thing about modern society is that no one has any idea when they donโt die.
Like, the number of lives saved by controlling air pollution in America is probably over 200,000 per year, but the number of people who think their life was saved by controlling air pollution is zero.
New contributor Joe Flannery-Sutherland traces the origins of apples and pears, their evolution across millions of years, and how the attraction to early hominids has resulted in the rich cider landscape we now have.
No republican should be running unopposed during the next election.
Anywhere. For any position. No matter how small your town is.
A lot of places have the potential to flip after this disaster.
Do it. Run for office.
You are not any less qualified than the people in power right now.
