Siegal likened herself as a young woman to Brenda Patimkin, the headstrong, beautiful daughter of assimilated nouveau riche Jews in Philip Roth’s Goodbye, Columbus, played by Ali MacGraw in the film adaptation from 1969. “I was very much Brenda,” she says, whose father doted on her, whose mother was “chic, domineering, and demanding.” She had the same jewelry, the same fur coats. “My father made lightbulbs,” she says, “and I lit up the room when I came in.” (In a later text, she called herself “the Light Bulb Princess of Englewood Cliffs.”) Siegal also “identified a little bit with Marjorie Morningstar” — the ambitious, “sort of lovesick, sort of gorgeous” daughter of an Upper West Side Jewish family, played by Natalie Wood in the film of the same name from 1958. “Jeffrey knew about Marjorie Morningstar,” Siegal says. “And Brenda Patimkin. He knew because he was a poor Jew.”

I don't think much of the 'Jewish affinity' stuff as a hypothesis, but I do think Epstein was very good at exploiting a certain TYPE of Jewishness - to long assimilated, well-off Jews, he represented their working-class past (while still being of their world)

'Insiders who are on the outs', as William Gass put it - which describes Trump too, of course

Something that I think is clear is that Epstein had a great talent for picking up people enmeshed in power when they felt at their most powerless - Maxwell after the scandal of her father's death, Siegal being abandoned by studios and already frustrated at not being a writer

I'd love to see something about this from someone closer to it

What I think this does, as much as it does anything else, is expose the underbelly of NYC cultural society in a way that it hasn't been before - this isn't the Mike Nichols end of things, which can be endlessly romanticized, but arguably the more common truth of it

Reading the Peggy Siegal piece and thinking - predictably, this is framed mostly as the 'Hollywood' side of the story, which is one of the benefits of LA-NYC being joined at the hip (if it's bad, it's the former; if it's good, it's the latter), but I think that falls apart - she/Woody were NOT LA
