Exciting new frontier for Johnson's ability to deny reality point blank and sort of seem to believe it

Tesla sued after Austin shooting suspect allegedly assaulted co-worker A 65-year-old woman says the automaker ignored warning signs before Ndiaga Diagne, the suspect in Sunday’s mass shooting, assaulted her. She sued Thursday.

the Austin mass shooter was a Tesla employee who assaulted a coworker during a company-allowed prayer break late last year

the company refused to give the victim her assailant's name so she could press charges, and he went on to become a mass shooter

This is the internal counterpart to the external conceit that if it doesn't target the entire world, it's useless (the Suno guy was asked why he didn't do something smaller that actual musicians could use, and his response was 'because we want billions of customers')

when you described the world as having a "Global North" and a"Global South" you were doing woke DEI indentity politics, and when you used the phrase "settler colonialism" it was bigotry of the worst kind. anyway welcome to the new greater north american destiny power dome

β€œWhy,” she says, β€œdoes Peggy Siegal, who is 78 years old, who did nothing her entire life but work as a single woman, and make a success as a result, have to suffer so badly for this story when heads of state and royalty and presidents have done far worse than I have?”
Many people close to Siegal say the Epstein opprobrium was less a catalyst for her expulsion than an excuse β€” that there was very little goodwill left for her by the time the news broke. With the exception of Siegal’s longtime pal Roger Friedman β€” the journalist and gossip blogger and the only person willing to go on the record in her defense β€” Siegal’s friends and associates say the emails provide only a tiny window into just how venomous she could be. (In the messages, she calls her contractor, with whom she’s feuding, an β€œAsian cunt”; her PR nemesis, whom she believes is trying to steal her clients, β€œa slimball who deserves to be but fucked to death.”)

As Johnathan Rosenbaum has pointed out, the only poor people ever seen in Allen's films are Jewish and reminiscent of yesteryear - that's the only kind of poverty he's interested in, because it reflects both his own past, his current status, and his own guilt/ambivalence about both

β€œJeffrey Epstein actually knew exactly who I was,” she says. β€œBeing a poor Jewish boy from Sea Gate” β€” the southernmost reach of Brooklyn β€” β€œwhose father swept up the parks and whose mother was a housemaker.” Siegal had grown up in Englewood Cliffs, an affluent suburb on the western bank of the Hudson; her best friend was Claudia Cohen, who became the editor of β€œPage Six”; nearby was Ellen Levine, who became second-in-command at Hearst Magazines.
Epstein’s family, she says, was β€œreally poor. They were not middle class. So he invented himself. And when he came upon me β€” that yes, my grandfather came over from Warsaw, Poland, in 1905 as a stowaway on a boat and went to work for Thomas Edison, who was a huge antisemite, and that when he died, he owned the fourth largest lightbulb company in America β€” Jeffrey loved that story. He loved that the daughter in the family was the go-getter. I was obsessed with success, as was he.”

Siegal likened herself as a young woman to Brenda Patimkin, the headstrong, beautiful daughter of assimilated nouveau riche Jews in Philip Roth’s Goodbye, Columbus, played by Ali MacGraw in the film adaptation from 1969. β€œI was very much Brenda,” she says, whose father doted on her, whose mother was β€œchic, domineering, and demanding.” She had the same jewelry, the same fur coats. β€œMy father made lightbulbs,” she says, β€œand I lit up the room when I came in.” (In a later text, she called herself β€œthe Light Bulb Princess of Englewood Cliffs.”) Siegal also β€œidentified a little bit with Marjorie Morningstar” β€” the ambitious, β€œsort of lovesick, sort of gorgeous” daughter of an Upper West Side Jewish family, played by Natalie Wood in the film of the same name from 1958.
β€œJeffrey knew about Marjorie Morningstar,” Siegal says. β€œAnd Brenda Patimkin. He knew because he was a poor Jew.”

I don't think much of the 'Jewish affinity' stuff as a hypothesis, but I do think Epstein was very good at exploiting a certain TYPE of Jewishness - to long assimilated, well-off Jews, he represented their working-class past (while still being of their world)

Something that I think is clear is that Epstein had a great talent for picking up people enmeshed in power when they felt at their most powerless - Maxwell after the scandal of her father's death, Siegal being abandoned by studios and already frustrated at not being a writer

What I think this does, as much as it does anything else, is expose the underbelly of NYC cultural society in a way that it hasn't been before - this isn't the Mike Nichols end of things, which can be endlessly romanticized, but arguably the more common truth of it

06.03.2026 15:38 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 3 πŸ“Œ 0

Reading the Peggy Siegal piece and thinking - predictably, this is framed mostly as the 'Hollywood' side of the story, which is one of the benefits of LA-NYC being joined at the hip (if it's bad, it's the former; if it's good, it's the latter), but I think that falls apart - she/Woody were NOT LA
