Yes and no. I think it needs to be recognized but also contextualized, I guess. Was he a Fr Coughlin figure or was it the water he swam in; crucially did the Catholic Church *at the time* facilitate this kind of crap and encourage its spread?

It was spreading exterminationism? My impression is that he talked a lot about Masons and “Zionists” but often caveated that with “not most Jews, of course”. Not great, but sadly probably better than his contemporaries.

Just how much antisemitism are we talking to make him a ”prominent sinner”? Like typical-for-his-country-and-time (and in a Church that could have been MUCH better on this) antisemitism, or above and beyond stuff?

Yeah I get that. I still think the character of Jack was more layered than Nicholson‘s portrayal (which is so good on its own that I wouldn’t change it). Doctor Sleep the film uses a lot of that from the novel in a way that makes sense.

Has there been any more word about the school bombing that isn’t from Iranian or Israeli government sources? This is like, several Camp Mystics, several Uvaldes worth of tragedy, and I think it’s something Americans should care about (though it’s not like we cared about those other things to act).

Though tbf the movie of Doctor Sleep does end on a positive note and the changes make sense from an adaptation perspective, especially because it’s trying to be a sequel to both the original movie and the original novel.

Read the Shining and Doctor Sleep then watched both movies; while the films are respectively excellent and good in their own right, I prefer the book in both cases. King does dark (obviously), but he doesn’t like to leave it there at the end.

Not least of all because, as with everything else, the harms of reckless and vicious stupidity will fall on innocents who had nothing to do with it far more than on those responsible, even by their assent.

Really cool to be obliged by charity and common decency to hope as little harm comes of this deadly recklessness as possible while also knowing this will encourage even more power-drunk deadly recklessness.
