Yeah this seems to be the real problem.
Yeah this seems to be the real problem.
Iโm not trying to say itโs not a personal failing if thatโs the case. Iโm saying itโs easy to condemn these evils now when the Church has been speaking clearly for decades, and antisemitism is as clearly a sin as any.
Yes and no. I think it needs to be recognized but also contextualized, I guess. Was he a Fr Coughlin figure or was it the water he swam in; crucially did the Catholic Church *at the time* facilitate this kind of crap and encourage its spread?
It was spreading exterminationism? My impression is that he talked a lot about Masons and โZionistsโ but often caveated that with โnot most Jews, of courseโ. Not great, but sadly probably better than his contemporaries.
Wait are you using it only for stock and discarding the meat, or am I misreading this?
Just how much antisemitism are we talking to make him a โprominent sinnerโ? Like typical-for-his-country-and-time (and in a Church that could have been MUCH better on this) antisemitism, or above and beyond stuff?
Whatโs a good source to read on this?
Re-posting this before I go dark for the week
(Not that I believe etymology says much about what words mean to speakers now, but the derivation is interesting)
Tangentially, Iโm reminded of how in some Romance languages (Spanish, Catalan at least), the word for beautiful is derived from โformosusโ
What???
I even bought a t-shirt online alongside a replacement for my old tattered Social Distortion shirt that my wife wonโt let me wear in public anymore.
Okay, can confirm that @chrispps.bsky.social is correct and Television is a fantastic band. Their catalogue is so small, too, that you can take it all in pretty quickly. Canโt stop listening to them, especially their first two albums.
He was never against war per se, just against committing US people and resources to non-rapacious ends.
The reason Venezuela hasnโt yet descended into chaos is precisely because we didnโt kill *everyone* at the top level.
That too.
Whatโs even dumber is that there are elements of the right pushing back against the โHeroic Smol Bean Israelโ thing, but only because they believe Jews, writ large, are the problem.
Yeah, all the small arms are in the hands of a bunch of guys who have every reason to hold on to them. My guess is that some elements of the regime will eventually assert control, vow to leave Israel alone, and weโll declare total victory.
Apparently the MAGA chud viewpoint is that we can have peace just by blowing up bad guys from a distance, and the foreign policy establishment benefited from endless conflict so they engaged in gay and pointless diplomacy and nation-building
Given that there is no plausible strategic reason for this, itโs just โmurdering guys we donโt like while weโre killing people anywayโโฆ which has got to be illegal, but whoโs counting anymore.
Yeah I get that. I still think the character of Jack was more layered than Nicholsonโs portrayal (which is so good on its own that I wouldnโt change it). Doctor Sleep the film uses a lot of that from the novel in a way that makes sense.
Has there been any more word about the school bombing that isnโt from Iranian or Israeli government sources? This is like, several Camp Mystics, several Uvaldes worth of tragedy, and I think itโs something Americans should care about (though itโs not like we cared about those other things to act).
Though tbf the movie of Doctor Sleep does end on a positive note and the changes make sense from an adaptation perspective, especially because itโs trying to be a sequel to both the original movie and the original novel.
Read the Shining and Doctor Sleep then watched both movies; while the films are respectively excellent and good in their own right, I prefer the book in both cases. King does dark (obviously), but he doesnโt like to leave it there at the end.
Not least of all because, as with everything else, the harms of reckless and vicious stupidity will fall on innocents who had nothing to do with it far more than on those responsible, even by their assent.
Really cool to be obliged by charity and common decency to hope as little harm comes of this deadly recklessness as possible while also knowing this will encourage even more power-drunk deadly recklessness.
โYes Mr Secretary of WAR who wrote books about how laws are gay, we will make a deal with you but only if you extra-double pinky swear to follow the lawโ
Anyone who makes this deal (Amodei) is as much of a moral monster as someone who doesnโt pretend to care.

logging back off in a bit, but every single tech company working with the government has got to know what they want it for, right?
Lotta libs arenโt either, tbc. I just think you gotta swallow the whole catechism, and the โcafeteriaโ charge is often projection.
What if, hear me out, โconsurrvativeโ Catholicism isnโt actually orthodox?
