Hi everyone! Today I'm launching my new podcast, Buried in the Attic: Stories Grandma Never Told Us. It features fascinating and surprising stories I've run across in my genealogy research. If you're into history or true crime, please give it a listen! You can find it on Apple podcasts and Spotify.
If you have loved ones buried in the Chicagoland area but you're out of state, have less mobility in the snow than you'd like, or just don't have time to trek out to the cemetery, I can place decorations for you! Check out my website for more info: gravestonesandgenealogy.com/gravestones
Did you know I have a TikTok channel? Check me out on www.tiktok.com/@graves.and....
I was going to, but Bluesky says you can't be messaged ...
I was at your panel at DragonCon. I'm looking for someone to compose a podcast theme song.
@grooveis4life.bsky.social How do I contact you for an estimate for a job?
Thrilled to announce my new business - Gravestones and Genealogy - has launched! gravestonesandgenealogy.com
Shame on every single Democrat who voted to "table" the articles of impeachment. You all better have a DAMN GOOD REASON.
@seancasten.bsky.social You owe us an explanation, and it better be good, or you'll never see another cent from me. I've always been a huge supporter, but this is a deal-breaker.
I truly do not understand people who gatekeep family history from their other family members.
It was my first time at Gettysburg, and I hope I get to go back. It's just so vast, four days isn't enough to sit with all that history and let it sink in.
like someone was throwing small pebbles at it very quickly. I guess it could have been insects, but it was the only time it happened in the 20 minutes we were out there.
I have yet to watch/listen to any of the videos I took, but I may have captured that last experience.
It was very bizarre.
No one was there. They were still 50 yards away, and we couldn't hear them. But I distinctly heard someone right near me walking and jangling with each step. Oh, actually 3 things happened. That couple finally went inside, and a little while later, the metal fence in front of me started making noise
It was just us and another couple, and they were a good 50 yards from us. A few minutes later, I heard a jangling moving from my left to my right. I thought it was the others walking past us, so I turned my head to see where they were going, and honestly, I was a little annoyed they were so noisy.
It was in my back pocket, and I grabbed it to silence it. I saw I had no notifications, and then I realized it hadn't felt like a notification buzz (this was later confirmed when I received a notification with the phone in the same back pocket.) This sounds nuts, but it felt like a pinch.
My friend and I went to Gettysburg because we love history and also to do some ghost hunting. We were at a location with a ghost hunting group when 2 things I can't explain happened. We were alone on the edge of the battlefield when I felt what seemed like my phone buzzing with a notification. 🧵
Good morning to everyone but HJ on Find a Grave, who felt the need to school me in proper photo-taking etiquette. I have deleted the photo he had an issue with, and if he wants one, he can go get it himself.
I run across so many examples of this. Parents, please do not do this to your children.
soldiers, defended the accused in Salem, and minded their own business. Even those in power in early New England seem to have been unusually fair. But you have to take the bad with the good (and also realize that what records show may not be the whole story.) 2/2
I've mostly found that my husband's ancestors were good people. Or, at least, as good as the Puritans could be. Research has been tough the past few days - I found one great who participated in a massacre, and just found the first documented enslaver. Mostly, though, his ancestors were Union 1/
Some of my husband's family came to New England in the 1600s, and they're all "prominent men." Because there were like 80 men in their entire county. 😂 But there's lots of info, which is both good and bad when you're writing a book on alllll his direct ancestors ...
I spent the morning fulfilling Find a Grace requests in one of my favorite cemeteries. ❤️
I replied to their email with a screenshot of the portal showing the file, then attached it as well. I managed to keep my snarky comment to myself.
But seriously, WTF. Why is it EVERY time, EVERY office? I request files all the time, and Cook County is the only place where I have issues. 2/2
Why is Cook County THE WORST when it comes to pulling records? I requested an inquest the other day. A death certificate was required, so I uploaded it. I woke up today to an email saying they cannot complete my request until I upload a death cert. I check. IT'S RIGHT THERE. 1/2
I took a trip to the Illinois State Archives in Springfield yesterday. First time in the Capitol!
I don't understand why people love him. How does anyone look at that and think, "yeah, that's cool," or "he knows what he's doing!"
Last night I discovered that on October 11, 1883, my husband's 2nd great-grandmother's ship left Scotland for the U.S. She and her sister traveled to Glasgow from Co. Donegal, and it cost them each about $600.
I became surprisingly emotional. It's not even my own family. 😆 #genealogy
We're a small group of liberal-minded people looking to make a difference and help others navigate this scary time. Will you join us?
