I realized that while Iβd heard the Mission:Control! stuff a _lot_ (every DC area show from show 1 in '97 to early 2000, plus a few in other places), the only times I'd heard the Identikit material live was two LA area shows the week of 9/11.

So glad you got to see this! We didnβt get Back of Love at BFF in Vegas in Oct, but otherwise similar set. My wife heard J playing the riff to A Song With No Words when they sound checked that morning, but maybe itβs just a warmup move (?). It was so great to hear those songs live again.
I agree, but with band already mixed to stereo on 4-track cassette I wasnβt going be dragging that sound out. :-) Iβve always chosen to remember it as a reminder that itβs ok let something steal focus or obscure something else in a mix at times.
A deeply rockist version of this from my past: guitarist asks for the solo to be louder, I turn it up a bit and he say βNo, a LOT louder. When Angus Young takes a solo, does anyone give a fuck what the kick drum is doing?β :-)
Devin Ocampo and myself after Faraquetβs reunion show in LA at Zebulon.
Another thank you for mentioning the LA show at the right moment!
I remember reading the book at the height of my (pre music) submarine obsession and digging it. Never seen the movie.
I can confirm this was their first show.
3 of these 7 are in myβ¦top 30 (?) records. (Honestly, I have no clue about the numbers, I just like them a lot :-)
I remember making a RealAudio clip from that Compound Red album for the DeSoto web site. I canβt remember why they couldnβt do it themselvesβmaybe the encoder only ran on Windows or they didnβt have ripping software? Something even quainter than _wanting_ a RealAudio clip anyway. :-)
@newartillery.bsky.social Randomly wondering if you know what happened with that Juno documentary?
I have one of that fails occasionally, only after parking the car inside on a hot day. An hour later, it works perfectly. Actually, that reminds me itβs been about an hourβ¦and yep, closed fine. :-(
IIRC the Dismemberment Plan openedβit was the first time I saw them.
Thank you _SO_ much for doing so! Iβd resigned myself to not seeing them but this made me look at when exactly they were playing and thus I discovered that theyβre playing LA and got
tix. Yes!
I ran into Rich Harrison, the producer/collaborator on that, at an LA bar a few years back. Cool dude and a real characterβwhen he found out I grew up in the DC area we talked about go-go for a bit. Had to work to get some of his resume out of him, he was pretty humble about what heβs done.
Earlier this year I reconnected one of them with (digital transfers of) some of their master tapes from β87. Didnβt know them, long story how I ended up with the tapes, but it felt good to help get those recordings where they belong.
So sorry my friend. May her memory be eternal.
A friend who was my roommate when Let It Be came out will start singing this any time I mention anyone named Gary. 40+ years of hilarity. :-)
It allows you to get whatβs good from βCat Scratch Feverβ w/o having to listen to the Nuge.
Youβre allowed to assume the absolute worst of anyone driving one of those pieces of shit. I donβt make the rules.
@tedleo.bsky.social Thanks for last nightβyou did absolute justice to the music while making it your own (dub Echoplex madness!). I believe that was my 18th #gangoffour show with the first being 43 years ago (!!!) at the Ontario Theater in DC. Truly the end of an era and a fitting send off. Cheers!
These are objectively excellent cats.
100% agree
And donβt forget the 3rd authorβCarlos Alomar. By all accounts itβs his riff.
When I first moved out on my own, I bought Hunky Dory and listened to Life On Mars? every morning for about a year.
Theyβre certainly rarer, but according to isitbandcampfriday.com the next one is March 7.
Didnβt know you were into Young Marble Giants! A big fave from way back. Reminds me to look for a copy of their Testcard EPβthe guy who turned me onto them originally had that, but Iβve never run across a one.
I should do this. I hate those things so much.
Iβm not sure, but I might have the Fugazi oneβ¦might be a while before I can look for it, but Iβll keep it in mind.
Reminds me to spend more time with All Structures Align.
My condolences to you and your family.
