@danielleducrest
I'm the author of Tipping the Scales, a fantasy novella now available as an ebook and in hardcover and paperback. I also make digital Steampunk art and beaded art. I post about writing, publishing, fiction and art.

Flier with book summary, a scaley blue-green tail, QR code to my website scales.danielleducrest.com, and list of upcoming dates (same dates as in the content of the post).
My spring "book tour" is underway for my dragon fantasy novella and adult steampunk coloring books. I hope to see you soon!
March 7th: LLA Con, Lake Charles, LA
March 28th: Books by the Bay Festival, Pensacola, FL
April 11th: Books Along the Teche Literary Festival, New Iberia, LA
I just came across Open Books, a bookstore with a physical location in Pensacola, FL, that supplies free books to inmates in Florida prisons. It looks like a cool nonprofit.
Thanks!
On an average day, I'm aware of writing, but I never feel like I'm doing much of it. And then I end up with a 74,000+ word manuscript and I'm left wondering how the hell that happened. #writinglife
My current project has 74,500 words, but only 5,800 of those are unique words. I'm flabbergasted, frankly. But at least I'm not the only one. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone, for example, is ~77,000 words long with 5,687 unique words. medium.com/zareen-faroo...
I'm back at Moncus Park today for the Farmers Market! #fantasy #fiction https://scales.danielleducrest.com
Book quote of the day:
"Shut up," I say, command now in my voice. "And be cool."
I throw a glance over my shoulder. Apparently, be cool means sit ramrod straight with every muscle taut, but at least the shut up directive is easier for him to handle.
β Last Chance to Save the World by Beth Revis
My wife was watching a Netflix show last night where a woman sat down to write a novel and the very first thing she wrote was the title.
I kept my mouth shut because I didn't want to crap on her show, but yeah no. That's nonsense.
Lol. Agreed!
D'oh, by "drawing" I mean "painting." Lol
Wetlands are magical
Off-center art can be so interesting. Your eye is drawn to the dock, but there's so much more to the story that's revealed by showing more of the lake than you would otherwise. This is a gorgeous drawing.
Picking a title for a novel is way too difficult. #writingwoes
Steampunk adult coloring page for the letter F
I'm continuing with my updating project of my old alphabet adult-coloring series. Here's Letter F. I've combined Victorian house elements (partly inspired by houses in Shreveport, LA) with art-nouveau elements (inspired by Alphonse Mucha). #coloring #steampunk #blackandwhite
Book quote of the day:
He sees the old tile floors and the white lacy tablecloths and an old gramophoneβKnights, too, are long-lived, and they bring the past with them wherever they go, just as Niko's people do.
β To Clutch a Razor by Veronica Roth
Moncus Park, Lafayette, LA: February 14th and 18th LLA 2026, Lake Charles, LA: March 7th Books by the Bay, Pensacola, FL: March 28th Books Along the Teche, New Iberia, LA: April 11th
My "book tour" schedule is shaping up for the spring. Get my books in person, or order anytime online wherever fine books are sold. https://scales.danielleducrest.com.
Steampunk adult coloring page turned art print: Number 10 decorated with filigree, emerging from black circuitry in the background and white circuitry and gears on the border/foreground
My monochrome version of steampunk #10.
Oh, I wish for that! Instead, I've got ADHD and a full-time job that interrupts writing time.
Rumor is that some writers can plot, write a story that follows that plot, and eventually land on a final draft that makes sense. I want to find these writers, shake them and demand they give me all their secrets. #writingwoes
Spambot message praising one of my fanfiction stories and asking if they could collab with my on illustrations.
Is there anything more baffling than paying for art for a fanfic? Every few months, another spambot reaches out about doing just that.
The imposter syndrome is strong today. #writingwoes
I have nine writing projects, one of which is in the line-edits stage, but do I want to work on that one? Of course not. No, the one I keep going back to is nowhere close to sharing with other people. #writingwoes
Old page from my website, snapshotted from the time when I was seeking a literary agent.
The process of finding a literary agent is weird. Here are my thoughts on it: https://danielleducrest.blogspot.com/2026/01/the-weird-process-of-finding-agent.html #publishingwoes #querying
(Take 2 with fixed link!) Are you researching how to self-publish your book? Here are a few articles I found useful, what I learned from them and what I did with that knowledge: https://danielleducrest.blogspot.com/2025/12/useful-self-publishing-advice-articles_01104111900.html
D'oh, I said hardcover when it's actually the paperback! I apologize to everyone who was misled!
Anyone else doing genealogy research and end up surprised by what you find?
