Avalon mourns the passing of Melvin Parson, a former tenant and board member, and founder of A Brighter Way and We The People Opportunity Farm. Melvin had a huge impact, helping so many returning citizens live their best lives - we will miss your friendship, your inspiration, and your amazing smile.
Avalon is grateful to the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners for its commitment to supporting our Continuum of Care and the permanent housing needs of our neighbors who have exited homelessness. We are grateful to Commissioner Andy LeBarre for his leadership as a member of the Continuum of Care
Last month we lost a true leader in affordable housing and homelessness services, former Washtenaw County Administrator Bob Guenzel. Today we honor his efforts in building the Delonis Center and moving so many people from homelessness to housing: https://avalonhousing.org/a-tribute-to-bob-guenzel/
Take a peek inside Avalon's newest affordable housing building, Dunbar Tower in Kerrytown, which we have just completed in partnership with the Ann Arbor Housing Commission. Thanks MLive for the coverage! https://ow.ly/y2kb50Yneqp
This past year held a lot of milestones for Avalon, some visible, some less so. Read about the housing and support we provided with our partners in our 2025 Impact Report: https://avalonhousing.org/impact-report-2025/
HUGE shout out to Alpha Rho Chi, the co-ed architecture fraternity at U-M, for hosting a charity 5K run that will benefit Avalon! The run will take place April 4 on U-M's North Campus. We're so grateful for the support! Check out details at https://runsignup.com/Race/MI/AnnArbor/AlphaRhoChi

RIP to civil rights giant Rev. Jesse Jackson. His work for economic justice for all had a huge impact on housing policy. In this speech from 2023, former HUD Secretary Marcia Fudge said there may not be a Fair Housing Act without Rev. Jackson's work. https://archives.hud.gov/news/2023/pr23-143.cfm

We're so grateful to the Karen Patterson and the other staff and volunteers from Humane Society of Huron Valley for holding a free pet vaccine clinic at Hickory Way yesterday -- 48 pets got their shots!
To kick off Black History Month, here's a map from Justice In Deed recording the approx. 8,500 properties in the county with racially restrictive covenants. While many have been repealed, the map represents an important historical record of segregation. https://www.justiceindeedmi.org/maps-and-data
Several Avalon staff were among the volunteers who braved the cold in Washtenaw County for the "Point In Time" count of homeless people across the county. Avalon's own Katrina Smith shared some reflections about the experience: https://avalonhousing.org/reflections-on-pit/
Thanks to the Humane Society of Huron Valley, we'll be hosting a free vaccine clinic for dogs and cats on Monday, Feb. 2 at Carrot Way. Pet owners who are facing housing insecurity, are seniors, qualify for low-income services or are facing extreme financial hardships are eligible to participate.
