holding dreams
in enticing
proximity

but often
it's a bum steer,
that certainty
a mirage,
never quite
so near

headlines after all,
are born
of calamity,
not cheer

& yet hope
holds numbness
at bay—

dreams for
dreaming's sake
can wash
life's dreariness
away.
