(I also think bickering over what defines "indie" is generally not helpful - and tbh way too reminiscent of music related arguments I remember having 20 years ago)

I think true indie would mean being completely free from external stakeholders/financing, at which point the benefit comes from knowing the studio is making choices unfettered by corpo big cheeses. However, I don't think that's actually a very helpful definition of indie in the current ecosystem!
