I’m running a mentored volunteer research project and have been using it as a way to teach basic ecology, evolution, philosophy, research methods, professional skills, and practical data collection skills, all with reference to the project we’re doing.
Maybe this is what intro bio should be.
A picture of a Plain-bellied Watersnake posing over dirt and leaf litter. This snake is brown with some black markings on their back and a yellow-ish belly.
A DeKay's Brownsnake chilling on a paved trail. This snake is light brown with some darker brown patterning on their back.
A Central Ratsnake chilling on leaf litter. This snake is dark brown with some yellow colors sprinkled between scales.
A Cottonmouth coiled over some small rocks. This snake is dark brown with a darker brown head and some patterning on their body.
More Tennessee early spring shenanigans! Nice to see this much snake activity so early in the year!

An immature Lophiomys imhausi displaying specialized hairs and warning coloration (A) and the same individual (center) with an adult male (top right), and female (top left), from the same trap location. The juvenile is being groomed by the male (B). FROM: J Mammal. 2020 Nov 17;101(6):1680–1691. "The secret social lives of African crested rats, Lophiomys imhausi"
The African crested rat (Lophiomys imhausi) is a rabbit-sized rodent with patterned coat.
They have no natural predators which puzzled scientists because they don't display obvious deterrents to large African predators.
That's when studies found they were packing enough poison to kill an elephant.

When someone says „Scientists do not want you to know“ you can dismiss everything from there on. Scientists want you to know. They are desperate that you know. They can’t shut up about what they found out and want you to know.
Absolutely bonkers level of corruption
Just a tired little kit fox, watching the sun rise before going to bed.

Looks about right to me. I mean, in return you get cute fluffy baby mammals. Seems fair.
It’s a fairy shrimp, fam.
I mean…. LOOK AT THEM! So hard to photo that little narrowing at the antenna end tho 😭😂
On World Wildlife Day, a reminder that nature is doing her best to survive us. Fairy shrimp in the middle of a city, in the scuzziest puddle possible. Branchinecta lindahli. #inverts
A portrait of an adult female grizzly bear mom, standing up being a rock and looking back towards the camera. She had distinctive reddish fur on her face and ears.
A long-tailed weasel standing attentively in short green grass. It is a small mustelid with a long body, light brown belly and dark brow and white patterned face. Its long, black-tipped tail is visible in the background.
A pair of fledgling great horned owls sitting side by side on a tree. The owl on the right is facing away from the camera, reaching back over its shoulder to preen its feather. It’s sibling sitting by its side with one of its feathers in its bill and its claw raised grabbing out for it.
A bobcat sitting in tall green and brown grass, letting out a yawn with its head back, eyes closed, and mouth wide open.
On this #WorldWildlifeDay I’m reflecting on how fortunate I’ve been to encounter so much diverse wildlife. There is so much magic in our environment that needs protecting.

Did you know that the bees that need saving are NOT honeybees?
Honeybees are the dairy cows of bees. People brought them over from Europe to make us honey.
The problem with honeybees, esp in resource-limited ecosystems (like hey! cities!) is that they compete with our native bees for food.
