I had so much fun reading a few of the essays already and they're so rad! Just tiny little snippets of delicious narrative wisdom. The sort of thing too niche and too small to get featured on a conference, but insanely valuable

Anyway, mine's about writing biographies, the quick and dirty way

Oh so the reason why I considered narrative techniques were the culprit was because the Dutch research said there was no effect from news consumption *unless* you're looking at readers of tabloid media but they were not sure why

But the English papers just assumed it was de facto all news media

Based on research and comparative analysis, yeah? Likely the same mechanism? But I never chased a masters to do proper research because I decided to make games instead lol

Basically I wanted to know why tabloid news readers scored so highly on things like believing the world was more violent than it is, and I wondered whether the type of narrative techniques used in tabloid news vs other new media could trigger a cultivation effect.

It was about whether the Cultivation theory could be observed with consuming news articles and broadcasts. If I remember correctly the difference was "yes, provided..." versus the original "no, unless..."
This was 15 years ago so hopefully someone ran the research again

For my thesis, I found that the original Dutch research was mistranslated into English. The translated paper, due to a nuance error, reached the opposite conclusion. And so I had to toss out a bunch of English language papers because they relied heavily on the translation's conclusion.

BTW it is EXTREMELY common for academic papers to declare Lara Croft the first playable female game character (a very easy fact to debunk). As a grad student I wrote a paper that traced every appearance of this "fact" to a single paper, which is why you don't only engage with academic texts!!

I very much relate.
What makes tool design for narrative hard is that narrative requirements change per title. My own tool doesn't even support all the types of work I've done in my career.

But a lot of frustration can be mitigated by choosing an existing tool during pre-production
