Portrait of Prof Robert Van de Noort, Vice Chancellor of University of Reading, alongside a campus sign and a message about climate change and sustainability efforts.

Climate change is not a distant threat. It is already shaping life in Berkshire and beyond.

In his latest column in Reading Today, Professor Robert Van de Noort, reflects on the extreme weather we are experiencing locally and why the work of the IPCC matters to communities like ours.

Looks like a thorough and measured analysis - unlike the sensationalist claims I've seen elsewhere.

Just listened to this and very much recommend it to anyone who is interested in what Europe can and should do for Ukraine. Whether or not you agree with Mark's criticism of the French-UK coalition-of-the-willing initiative, there are lots of well-argued and constructive proposals in there.

Anyway, overall I think we agree that making sure Ukraine can deter Russia and defend itself is not only the right thing to do but also in Europe's best self-interest. Currently, the main factor that reduces the likelihood of the book's scenario is not NATO policy, but the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

I doubt that Russia would be content with anything short of a consolidated and highly repressive puppet dictatorship in Ukraine. Of course, if it came to this horror scenario, the Russian regime might shift focus and start looking more seriously at military aggression in Moldova or the Baltics.

23.01.2026 17:02 👍 0 🔁 1 💬 1 📌 0

And even if Ukraine faced some political turmoil after agreeing to an unjust and painful ceasefire deal, I doubt that Russia would be content and move on to attack Estonia. I strongly suspect it would remain Putin's primary goal to destroy Ukraine as an independent nation once and for all.

However, I have some issues with the book's depiction of a Ukrainian defeat. I doubt that there is any possibility of pro-Russian political forces gaining a parliamentary majority in Kyiv if the unoccupied parts of Ukraine remain free, regardless of the huge post-war challenges facing the country.

Me sitting on a couch holding the book "If Russia Wins" with a cat sitting on my legs.

Loki and I read "If Russia Wins" by @carlomasala1.bsky.social recently. An interesting book. Scenarios and contingencies are something that political scientists (and maybe even politicians?) too often shy away from. I think scenario building is actually more useful than trying to predict the future.

Two months into my @leverhulme.ac.uk fellowship @uniofreading.bsky.social. Excited to be back in academia. Lots of reading to catch up on, but also working on paper drafts and submitted some conference abstracts. More on that soon, hopefully. In the meantime, let me introduce a new family member.

Ukraine’s New Theory of Victory Should be Strategic Neutralization By ensuring that Russia’s war is operationally pointless, Ukraine can survive, adapt, and achieve success, no matter how prolonged the war.

Excellent long-read analysis by Ukraine's former Minister of Defense, Andriy Zagorodnyuk, who - as peace through military means or negotiations are as unlikely as a Russian withdrawal - suggest Ukraine should adopt a "strategic neutralization" approach: carnegieendowment.org/research/202...

Another moment of truth. If Russia does not accept, which is not unlikely as they have not achieved what the want, it could lead to a twist that has been part of the Ukrainian Trump calculus from the start: Putin doesn't deliver, Trump gets angry. Will he then back Ukraine? An open question.
