Recently I got invited to join the new Godot UX team. When I have time I will be helping testing editor PRs and make Godot more usable for everyone.
What are some of the most annoying things about Godot UI/UX that you think need attention?
Also, ngl, there will be lots of icon making ๐ - but youโll work directly with me & our talented artists. Iโve done a lot UX on systemic games over the years, so hopefully should be a neat learning opportunity if you're into that.
Another internship up! UI Art Intern
Looking for someone UI-focusedโmenus, HUDs, icons, interaction states. If you're a generalist, your portfolio's gotta have interface work.

I saw this at Parallels/PAX Aus in Melbourne last year and it looked really fun and funny.

Thanks Eric!
Thanks Michelle!
You ever rely on writing tests for candidates? I want something short, like 1-2 hrs, feels like it wouldn't be oppressive in the context replacing one in a series of interviews... But I worry I'm gonna overshoot, give something I think is short and too long for them...
but instead it has given license to any type of designer who thinks "oh I like story" to apply, no writing samples, nothing, just ugh.
I should have called it "Writer (in Spreadsheets)"

I come to acknowledge my horrible mistake at calling this a narrative design internship... In the hopes of conveying to writer candidates that this is a systemic game and you are going to be writing a shit ton of barks...

Altho, unless you also have an army and it's not 1 v many, they probably don't rely on that - it's more about positioning effectively in a large group so they don't all bunch up using some boids type logic and also timing controls so they don't all attack at once, a single ai is usually p simple
Influence maps - basically score every tile of some size with a value measuring a tactical element - number of nearby enemies or allies represents danger/safety. Another heat map of resource values. Resource values - enemy strength = appealing areas to go, that kinda thing.

Blackley: Games follow a cycle similar to winemaking or beer brewing. Thereโs an addictive side to it that takes over. Sometimes, the alcoholic nature of these things is more important to the business than the artisanal side. You see the importance of microbrew beer wax and wane. The pretension of winemaking waxes and wanes. Itโs the same thing. With winemakin,g the intention is to let the grape reach its maximum potential. Thatโs the job. When you do that youโll have a superior product. Then you do that and you make a lot of money, business guys move in and want more of it. Then you lessen the quality of the product. The audience gets a little sick of it. Some people start to drink other stuff because it gets them drunk faster. Then the bottom falls out and itโs out of favor for a while to allow the grape to reach its potential. The business is about something else. After that cycle consumers get sick of that and one guy comes out and says, โIโm a winemaker. Iโm going to let the grape reach its full potential.โ Thereโs a New York Times article 15 or 20 years later about this great natural wine movement and weโre back to that stage again.
If you're wanting to read just one article/interview on Xbox and/or Gen AI in games, this is the one. Lot's of great snippets but this is my favorite:

What I *should* be doing today is working on my procedural storytelling article in Weird West for Game AI Uncovered, or my taxes (bleh), but what I'm gonna do is stub out this quirk system ๐
Yeeeeeeesssss. I recently learned Collin Robinson from What we Do In the Shadows got his start going on local news shows as a yoyo expert teaching kids environmentalism - but anytime he's asked for a trick he fails miserably youtu.be/dj9VF7LyffU?...

This looks fantastic!
Or any hypothetical productivity gain - if everybody has it (and it was actually effective) having it easily accessible to even indie devs means raising the bar to compete, not somehow being able to do things faster. You might do more things, but you won't do them cheaper.
