What the end of US foreign assistance to independent media has wrought. For decades, American taxpayers helped promote democracy around the world. Then the US switched teams.

An under-reported catastrophe for independent media around the globe. Thanks to Joel Simon for underscoring.

As chair of the North American Committee of the International Press Institute, I speak for myself and for my colleagues in voicing outrage at the unjustified arrests of Don Lemon and Georgia Fort for the crime of covering a demonstration. This has been an outrageous abuse of media freedoms.

We experienced such pushback at the AP, even though we would explain that the figures were backed by documentation, had
proved reliable in past conflicts and aligned with what journalists could observe. Casualty statistics are disputed in every war, so showing the sourcing transparently is vital.

This is an important initiative. Thank you to Bard, PEN America and my wife, Dru Menaker, for helping make it reality. As governments try to kill independent media, Kronika will keep their seeds alive for the future.

I met Pavel today at RFERL HQ in Prague. He is leading his Russia news team in the face of uncertainly. A lovely photo of Alsuk graces the wall from the day she was freed. They are just two of the extraordinary journalists of @RFERL working every day to bring truth to repressive countries. Bravo!!!

Jeremy and colleagues, Many deals I work on have concepts of conditional
notice. This is mine. Please consider this email my two week notice, revocable if the firm comes up with a satisfactory response to the current moment, which should include at minimum (i) signing on to the firm amicus brief in support of Perkins Coie in its litigation fighting the Trump administration's executive order against it, ii) committing to broad future representation, regardless of whether powerful people view it as adverse to them, (iii) refusal to cooperate with the EEOC's request for personal information of our colleagues clearly targeted at intimidating non-white employees, (iv) public refusal to fire or otherwise force out employees at the Trump administration's directive or implied directive and (v) public commitment to maintenance of affinity
groups and related initiatives. This is not what I saw for my career or for my evening, but Paul Weiss' decision to cave to the Trump administration on DEl, representation and staffing has forced my hand. We do not have time. It is now or it is never, and if it is never, I will not
continue to work here.
