For these, I like to think of it in two phases. First, is there a straight forward path to the king? If not, what is the best option to gain material (while not losing tempo).
And in all cases, I try to build as much pressure as I can.

There are lots of ways to do that, but it helps me prioritize.

I feel you. I just finished Broken Sword for the first time like a week ago. Not too terrible, but the puzzles seemed to be a bit dialogue-heavy for me.
