Prospective PhD Students:
I am planning to accept a PhD student for AY 2026-27 in the economics and education program at Teachers College. Apply if you want to use the economics of education to study immigration or politics/political engagement and public schools. :-)
Why is there no π response button? I do not β€οΈ this news.
Also updating operating system is always a good idea
I have had similar R-related flameouts⦠sometimes fixed by updates or reinstalling⦠is the answer maybe Stata?

My recent working paper, "New Places, New Players, a New Politics of Education," is in the Democracy and Its Discontents category.
Drats - sadly, it does not :-(
Ed Peeps - deep cut:
I am looking for the 2017-18 non-fiscal school membership files from the CCD. The files online are corrupted. :-(
Blake Heller and I wrote an editorial about Trumpβs proposals to end federal funding for adult education- whatever comes for FY 2026, itβs worth keeping an eye on this often overlooked part of our education sector @blakeheller.bsky.social

About 25% of all kids in the US are kids in immigrant families --> immigration policy IS education policy (n/n)
Changes in attendance are concerning for affected kids but also for their peers - absences disrupt classrooms and make it hard to teach, so these changes will likely also negatively impact non-immigrant peers (4/n)
In RI, daily absences for EL students increased by almost 4% and corresponded to anxiety/awareness of enforcement activity as proxied by google search data. (3/n)
Using a difference-in-differences design that compares English learners (ELs) and non-ELS, I estimate effects on student attendance in RI and CT.
In CT, average monthly attendance declined by 0.07 standard deviations and chronic absenteeism increased by over 0.5 % pt.
β οΈ New working paper alert! β οΈ
How has anxiety over immigration enforcement affected the attendance of kids in immigrant families in the second Trump presidency? (1/n)

Does where you go to high school affect whether you vote as an adult? My working paper estimating high school effects on civic engagement is now posted on Annenberg: edworkingpapers.com/ai25-1260.

#latergram Really enjoyed my visit to South Bend for the Notre Dame Civic Education Working Group! Great opportunity to meet with folks from across disciplines thinking about the role of schools in preparing children to become citizens. Thanks to David Campbell and Joseph Kahne for hosting!
Jim Ryan was dean when I was a PhD student at HGSE. I hold him in very high esteem. As a small anecdote, when I faced some serious medical issues as a first year student, he kindly wrote me a personal note expressing support and well wishes. I am really saddened by this.
Thread in the am but if you want the main takeaway: The 2024 Digest of Education Statistics (under the current administration) includes just 27 tables by the (Congressionally mandated) deadlineβfar fewer than the nearly 270, on average, published in prior years

Terrible policy that will only work to our disadvantage and hurt bright minds. An expansion of the domestic war on higher ed.
