Happy Black History Month from all of us at the Detroit Celtic Supporters Club. In Detroit, we don’t need an awareness holiday to know the value of Black history, but Black History Month remains a vital time to reflect on the past, reckon with injustice, and recommit ourselves to a more just future. Now more than ever, we must celebrate Black culture, amplify Black voices, and engage in the ongoing struggle for racial equity. As I’ve mentioned in years past, Detroit is the largest American city with a Black majority population. Black History Month is every month here. This city has been built, shaped, and sustained by Black Detroiters, past and present—Detroit does not exist without them.
In that same breath Celtic Football Club is nothing without all of the incredible Black players who have pulled on the hoops throughout the years. Detroit's own Gil Heron, Henrik Larsson, Bobo Baldé, Virgil Van Dijk, the list goes on. Black Celts have pushed made Celtic the globally massive club it is today. This Black History Month happens to be the 100th year of the celebration. First established in 1926 as Negro History Week by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, it was created to honor Black life, struggle, and achievement in a nation determined to erase it. A century later, that mission remains urgent. Black history is not just a record of progress, it is a history of collective struggle for self-determination, dignity, and liberation. At a moment when political forces seek to roll back hard-won gains, we are reminded that justice has never been freely given. It has always been fought for, organized for, and won together. Join us in celebrating Black history all month at @collect.beerbar and in our community. Black Lives Matter.
