Fresco of a griffin - a mythological creature with the head and wings of an eagle, and the body of a lion - attacking an Arimaspi, one of a legendary tribe of one-eyed people from northern Scythia. Uniquely, this griffin is snow-white, its wings spread out; the yellow-clad and masked Arimaspi holds his pelta - a crescent-shaped shield - above him to protect himself from the attacking griffin. There's a gilded silver krater on the left, and a fabulous fragment of a large gilded and colored shield on the right, which depicts the head of gold-helmeted Athena. The battles between the Aramaspi and griffins are known via a lost work by Aristeas, reported in Herodotus. The battles took place in the Hyperborean lands near the cave of Boreas, the North Wind, with the griffins defending their hoards of gold against the Arimaspi. This C2nd CE Roman relief is part of a celebration of Hadrian’s twentieth year as emperor. A bull is about to be sacrificed. The detail in the relief work is spectacular!
