So in order to run on original hardware it has to fit into a ratio of 160×144 which means all assets have to fit on a screen that large. This means character sprites have to stay within or near 16×16 pixels, adding outlines makes it larger in both dimensions by 2 pixels meaning you've got 14 left
Honestly for me it comes down to pixel ratios and hard black outlines. Some of the most iconic games from the era, Mario land 2, the oracle zelda games and pokemon all share a hard outline on all character and icons. It looks clean but some objects can be hard to draw with such little real-estate.
Progress continues on the upcoming game! The inventory works and items can be equipped enemies can explode and the player can take damage!

When I was a kid, During math tests and the like I always used to doodle in the margins of my paper, I haven't stopped that habit to this day 😅 although now a days instead of stick floating islands and stick figures I've fallen into the habit of drawing eyes 👀
