Introducing policies that will cause individuals to live constantly in fear of being returned to the place where they were persecuted is a racist tactic to score points against the political right, and it is already causing pain and suffering to those least able to advocate for themselves.
This is in direct contravention of our commitments under Article 34 of the Refugee Convention, which are to “as far as possible facilitate the assimilation and naturalization of refugees.” Refugees need security and stability to be able to recover from trauma and to integrate into society.
The changes laid before parliament today deliberately and callously undermine the level of protection that some of the most vulnerable people among us will be entitled to rely on.
We have been fielding calls from young asylum seekers to older refugees and foster parents scared to death about the implications of these changes, which purposely target the permanence of the sanctuary they have sought and which they need to rebuild their lives.
The recent flurry of policy announcements by the Home Secretary aiming to change “perceptions of what the refugee offer is” has been creating huge anxiety and distress among our client group.

People seeking safety need security in order to start over, but this govt seems to want to forget that there are people at the centre of this.
This cruel change, which deliberately keeps people’s lives in limbo, will not deter men, women, children & families fleeing war, conflict & persecution from seeking protection in the UK.
What it WILL do is trap people in a constant state of instability & profoundly harm their mental health.
New 2025 data show rising referrals of children as potential victims of trafficking.

This is extremely urgent as regards the hugely flawed and damaging Earned Settlement plans, which need to be scrapped entirely asap. There is no problem whatsoever with the existing five year system (bar the Life in the UK test, which could be made more relevant).
Smugglers often force people to pilot boats, using threats against them or their families. Prosecuting an Afghan 18 year old seeking asylum for this is twisted and shows how Labour is more interested in playing to Reform than ensuring people are provided with safety.
