Home Office may forcibly remove child asylum seekers from UK in handcuffs
Move is part of scheme to target families for expedited voluntary removals before enforced removal proceedings
The Home Office wants to handcuff children during forced removals of families.
This level of violence & dehumanisation must never be normalised, our spokesperson Griff Ferris warns.
Stand up for your neighbours.
Organise locally.

Introducing policies that will cause individuals to live constantly in fear of being returned to the place where they were persecuted is a racist tactic to score points against the political right, and it is already causing pain and suffering to those least able to advocate for themselves.

This is in direct contravention of our commitments under Article 34 of the Refugee Convention, which are to βas far as possible facilitate the assimilation and naturalization of refugees.β Refugees need security and stability to be able to recover from trauma and to integrate into society.

We have been fielding calls from young asylum seekers to older refugees and foster parents scared to death about the implications of these changes, which purposely target the permanence of the sanctuary they have sought and which they need to rebuild their lives.

Hi! Immigration lawyer here! Mahmood's view of the Refugee Convention as providing temporary protection just isnβt correct & AFAIK isnβt one anyone has ever adopted.
On the contrary, the Convention is clearly predicated on a long-term need for protection.

Refugee status to be temporary as Shabana Mahmood rips up rules on UK asylum
Home secretary announces 30-month protection limit, with refugees required to leave if their home countries are later judged safe
π§΅This is the biggest attack on the rights of recognised refugees in recent memory & is reminiscent of the worst failed policies of the disastrous last govt.
People seeking safety need security in order to start over, but this govt seems to want to forget that there are people at the centre of this.

This cruel change, which deliberately keeps peopleβs lives in limbo, will not deter men, women, children & families fleeing war, conflict & persecution from seeking protection in the UK.
What it WILL do is trap people in a constant state of instability & profoundly harm their mental health.

UK migrant families face giving up vital in-work benefits to avoid being βpunishedβ
Under Shabana Mahmoodβs proposals, wait for settled status would double to 20 years if public funds used while in work
What this means is that the UK government is going to entrench child poverty, deep poverty, and homelessness for many people across the country.

Migration is estimated to contribute over Β£3 billion to the UK economy every year.
Meanwhile, Jim Ratcliffeβs move to Monaco reportedly cost the UK Treasury between Β£440m and Β£4bn in lost tax revenue.
This rhetoric isnβt just incredibly harmful and divisive. Itβs also completely baseless.

This is extremely urgent as regards the hugely flawed and damaging Earned Settlement plans, which need to be scrapped entirely asap. There is no problem whatsoever with the existing five year system (bar the Life in the UK test, which could be made more relevant).

First person charged under new small boat Channel crossing law - BBC News
Aman Naseri, 18, denies endangering 46 people during a boat crossing to the UK on 5 January.
Smugglers often force people to pilot boats, using threats against them or their families. Prosecuting an Afghan 18 year old seeking asylum for this is twisted and shows how Labour is more interested in playing to Reform than ensuring people are provided with safety.

UKβs plans to seize asylum seekersβ phones condemned by campaigners
People who are sent to Manston processing centre will be eligible for searches for electronic devices from Monday
For many of those seeking asylum a mobile phone isn't just a lifeline to keep in contact with loved ones, it's an essential resource in accessing information and resources. State mandated theft is another example of Labour's dehumanisation of people seeking safety

UK asylum seekers not widely abusing modern slavery rules, report finds
Exclusive: Thinktankβs findings undermine successive home secretariesβ statements about misuse of system in England and Wales
Yet again, evidence shows that the governmentβs persecution of migrants is based on lies.
