New — I spoke to eight people who were present at the ICE protest on Saturday in Portland, Oregon when federal agents deployed tear gas and rubber bullets into a crowd of families, children, elderly and disabled people, and their pets.
These are their stories:
Today was a triumph for Portland’s working class and our shared struggle to get ICE out of our community. Thousands of Portland workers, mobilized by their unions in conjunction with Portland DSA and Portland Jobs with Justice, rallied and marched today in direct opposition to the federal government’s racist campaign of terror against immigrants in Portland. At the same time, we are outraged — but not surprised — at the federal government’s response to our unity: Without provocation, federal officers attacked thousands of union members, families with children, and community members with chemical agents, some shooting down from the top of the ICE building. Here’s what is clear: The federal government fears organized workers. From the streets to the workplace, we will fight ICE. They know we have a unique power to defend immigrants, defend workers, and defend Portland. ICE out of Portland!

It's hard to overstate how ell-organized the portland march that got gassed was... organizers made the crowd promise to be peaceful, said the march would slow in front of the ICE building but not stop, that we would stick to one chant (ICE Out). They did absolutely everything right and got gassed.
I saw it too:
I just got tear gassed along with thousands of union members, many of whom had their families with them. Federal agents at the ICE facility tear gassed children. We must abolish ICE, DHS, and we must have prosecutions. I expect to see enforcement of our city code prohibiting the use of tear gas.
