Religious values and confidence in science: Perceived tensions and common ground While confidence in science is high compared to other institutions, many Americans question whether scientists share their values, including religious ones. Narratives surrounding science and religion...

[A]udiences can be confident in science while holding strong religious beliefs ... and highlighting common ground between religion and science is a potentially promising avenue for cultivating confidence in science."

Fewer Wisconsinites got the flu shot this year. Some blame Trump. Dane County's vaccination rate is above average, but the statewide decline comes as a new strain raises worries.

Thanks to @erinmcgroarty.bsky.social for chatting with me about vaccine hesitancy! In these turbulent times, we need good reporting more than ever @captimes.com

Reply to Gonzรกlez-Bailรณn and Lazer: Industry control and conflicts of interest in social media research | PNAS Reply to González-Bailón and Lazer: Industry control and conflicts of interest in social media research

"[T]he reliance on industry-controlled conceptualization and categorization of data by academic researchers undermines ... peer review and the replicability of what Meta claims are highly policy-relevant findings."

Glad our field is continuing these difficult but important conversations ...

This nicely reinforces findings from our recent @pnas.org piece in which we argue โ€œthat industry players like Meta make significant investments into long-term research streams โ€ฆ to absolve their platforms of responsibility for adverse effects on society or individuals.โ€

Letโ€™s not be naive: We need to be very aware of industry influence in computational social science! Through control of data (and experiment) access the situation is even more problematic than in other industries, which makes the data access rights under DSA article 40 particular important!

โ€˜No Seed Oilโ€™ Restaurants Seize the Moment As the anti-seed-oil movement picks up steam, many restaurants are leaning on โ€œno seed oilsโ€ as part of their messaging and marketing.

The only way people seem able to navigate diet is to fixate on ONE THING that is the BAD THING.

That was wrong when it was sugar, HFCS, GMOs, gluten, lectins, meat, whatever. And of course it's just as wrong for seed oils.

Important. Politicians may be getting a โ€œfalse negativeโ€ reading of the state of politics from media and social media that monetise polarisation. This sort of thing and more citizen participation can help.
