Interesting Boodie skull I looked at today. It has supernumerary molars (5 instead of 4), an additional set of canines, and what appears to be a faint second premaxillary-maxillary suture.

Modern rock wallabies seem to survive by sticking together in small areas. Fossils show they need to travel

Today, rock wallabies rarely stray far from the safety of their rocky shelters. But the fossil record tells a very different story.

The words "free-roaming pet cat" stir many emotions in me....

In Australia, ~27 of our ~40 extinct mammal taxa are from cats alone.

Responsible cat owners need to keep their cats indoors.

I have been asked before how "fossilised" some of the material from cave deposits that I look at are. Still "subfossils", as they have not yet turned to stone, some can have a fair bit of mineral build up. In such cases these remains are easier to identify by the size of the molars.

So glad you got to go!

I visited in 2022. Its amazing to think of how much we owe to Mary and her discoveries today.

Personally, I don't think it's strange. Having such specimens means the animal did not die for nothing. They can still be used in education, displays (such as on animal poaching), and for genetic and isotopic research (depending on the preservation method).

Sad to miss it this year, but I look forward to a visit to the land of Moas!

Just a correction. You list Tight Entrance Cave as being on the Nullarbor, however that cave is located in the Southwest of Western Australia in the Leeuwin–Naturaliste region.

I have visited those claw marks myself and can attest that Tight Entrance is a very fitting name!

Thylacoleo in packs in an interesting choice. I dont recall any fossil evidence for the taxa being social.

I have had many discussions about this topic. The answer is often it's an "ecological equivalent". My issue is that we do not know enough about the taxa and the ecosystem involved to say what effect such relocations will have. What about local parasites? Disease? Differences in local flora?

The design is very nice and looks like an animal. Do we know if any Aus-palaeos were consulted on the Australian megafauna portion of this documentary?

This and the fact that feral deer are *protected* for recreational hunting just shows that the arguments for environmental hunting are just nonsense.

Hunters care about hunting. Not environmental managment.

Penny Wong accidentally saying the quiet bit out loud - for Labor the US relationship is more important than the Australian environment. Who do this lot think they work for?

Truly, what is going on anymore?

A taxonomic revision of the Bettongia penicillata (Diprotodontia: Potoroidae) species complex and description of the subfossil species Bettongia haoucharae sp. nov. | Zootaxa

I am the first author of the revision you are referring to. It is the incorrect species released into SA, so not a 'reintroduction'. The work elevated subspecies to full specific status, which may be what caused the confusion.

The climate targets announced by @albomp.bsky.social are so weak - imagine if we all took this attitude to work! Shame on the government for once again letting down Australia #climate #targets

β€œAchievable” as in weak!?

The PM @albomp.bsky.social has had a busy month so far, trying to convince the world he’s a climate champion when really he and Murray Watt are proving just how willing they are to sell Australia’s future for fossil fuel profits

Keep πŸ‘ Them πŸ‘ Inside πŸ‘

Cats are deadly to native fauna. Of the now ~45 extinct mammalian taxa an estimated 27 are a result of cats.

Let me put that into perspective.

There are globally ~80 extinct mammals. Over half of the worlds extinct mammals are from Australia with the majority from cats!

Australia vows to cut emissions 62 to 70 per cent by 2035 Australia will vow to cut its emissions by 62 to 70 per cent by 2035, lifting its sights further as the world strives to reach net zero emissions by 2050.

Anthony Albanese’s government are climate criminals and they’re consigning large parts of Australia to becoming uninhabitable. This is not just an environmental assault, it’s an assault on human rights.
