‘I sometimes wake up in tears for friends still there.’ Rümeysa Öztürk’s six weeks in ICE detention. - The Boston Globe As she was held in Louisiana, the fight to free Öztürk took place in protests and in the courts.

After co-authoring an op ed in the Tufts student paper, Rümeysa Öztürk was doxed by the Canary Mission, an anonymous website that publishes personal information of academics they consider anti-Israel. ICE then used the data to target her in carrying out Trump's brutal student protest crackdown.

A detailed black-and-white illustration of a large crowd of people packed together, holding protest signs that read “Free Speech Is an American Value,” “Stop Censoring Teachers,” “Education Needs Free Speech,” “Freedom to Speak, Freedom to Teach, Freedom to Learn for Everyone!,” “Education Is a Human Right,” and “Keep Your Nose Out of My Classroom and Education.” Behind the crowd are hand-drawn banners with “AAUP” in large block letters. Overlaid text at the bottom announces event details in bold marker-style font: “Rally for Free Speech, Friday 12/5, 3pm, Bryan Hall – IUB Campus, 107 S. Indiana.” A column of smaller text on the right lists issues such as recommended Chicago Principles, demands for “American values,” instructors removed for teaching course content, NEA defenses against attacks, and ongoing legislative actions against public schools. The overall style resembles a high-density pen-and-ink illustration filled with expressive faces and signs.

Indiana colleges must answer how new degrees commit to American values Under new requirements, universities must answer whether proposed degree programs exercise a "commitment to the core values of American society."

The Indiana Commission for Higher Education's new policy is threatening shared governance and academic freedom.

"This policy is the latest effort by Indiana's politicians to take power away from faculty & cheapen the education students have access to in Indiana."

It's time for IU to respect the value of its educators, and ensure faculty, staff, and graduate student worker compensation keeps pace with the cost of living and ensures that we can live and thrive. Fair compensation is essential to a world-class university.

At IUB, faculty salaries have not kept up with the cost of living. As the graph shows, relative to the cost of living, average faculty salaries declined by 10% between 2019 and 2025. Yet even with a vote of no confidence, Whitten's compensation has ballooned.

Be very, very quiet: IU's Elmer Fudd approach to transparency Time after time over the past few years, even for stories generating national attention, Indiana University did not provide anyone, including WFIU/WTIU News, an interview.

Despite changes affecting the lives of tens of thousands of students, faculty and staff, Indiana University continues to make most important decisions in secret and leaders routinely avoid interviews with informed journalists. @weiss-a-woni.bsky.social
