Also, in theory anyway, the crowd / other managers could scupper the chances of Really Well Known Song from Big Nation in the group stage by voting in large numbers for Big Nation’s other two songs. Now there’s some 3D chess for ya 😬
Ah right, I’d glossed over that bit. So there’s never any more than 3 songs competing per country across the whole tournament. No substitutes parachuted in for the “knockout” stages then? Makes life easier for a manager, I guess.
Me either for 12a (and 4d for that matter). Is 29 alliteration minus all?
In the meantime, here's this week's Young Punctum upgrade - April 1974, with tons of additional material, some of it possibly remembered only by me:

Fond PWC memories of Lex managing the USA and fielding… “Rad” by Smoosh. The real Origin Story for that famous Alan Hansen quote (uh-huh uh-huh yo)
LOL all of my top 3 choices have been snagged already. Will have to ponder some more.
maltese-cross style cassette package featuring an ink drawing of a sinuous dancing creature on the cover. cassette itself features a photo of a cow in shadow on one side and a dove on the other. cassette packaging is unwrapped and tracklisting and liner notes are both visible
Three "A Little Light" tapes are left:

Jacques Lejeune, ‘Petite Suite’ (1970)
(Another example of the sort of thing Tim Gane was sneaking into radio mixes 25 years ago)

Minimalist in a very strict sense, with repetition to the point of exhaustion and hysteria (not least for the singers on Side 1). Not your cosy Glass and Reich sort of minimalism, then. Listen if you’ve a mind here:

Front cover of the 1971 Polydor (Germany) LP, ‘Pieces From The Cloudland Ballroom’ by Anthony Moore. A grainy photograph of the exterior of said ballroom, taken at night, against a white background. Below the photo in ornate cursive text is the album title. Above it, in the same font, appears to be the following text: “Abey / seed‘ Goldfish A.B.C.D. Gol’fish M. N. O. Gol’fish S. D. R. Gol’fish R. D. R. Gol’fish”

fsvo “classic”. Debut solo LP from UK experimental composer/ songwriter, co-founder of Slap Happy and (later) collaborator with Pink Floyd. I chose this cos its final track was once included in a Stereolab radio mix.
Just realised I’m confusing them with The Colourfield
The next Bandcamp Friday of 2026 is this Friday, March 6th. From midnight to midnight PDT, we'll waive our revenue share and pass the funds directly to artists and labels.
A pair of Andrew Waylyk LPs (‘Irreparable Parables’ and ‘Inundated Indentations’; the latter contains instrumental / alternative mixes of the former). Art cards. Label sticker. Enamel badge.

27 & 28/28. Bernard Grancher, ‘Astra Lumen Solaria’ and ‘Tape X’ (both 2026)
This series ends with my favourite releases of the year so far: two contrasting albums, albeit both underpinned by synths & drum machines. LP is beautiful and dreamy, the tape more brutalist in style.
The ongoing weekly refurbishment of early Young Punctum continues. This week I revisit and refresh March 1974, with lots of incredible music that in some cases was clearly never, ever, EVER going to disturb the charts, and all the better for it:

So, as far as I can work out, this is Marit singing songs by the other participants in the current season of a Norwegian reality TV show. (They each in turn interpret one of hers). Still fab though; she could sing the Oslo phone book and it would be, most likely.

Just realised that the guitarist, Don Peake, was also the guitarist in Odyssey, my pick from yesterday. Spooky.

25/28. Shitao, ‘Aurès, 1954’ (2023)
I love the simplicity of Shitao’s music: a hip hop inspired beat, a sample, a melody line or piano figure, sometimes a bass part, and that’s it. The Aurès is a region of Algeria, where the War of Independence was started by Berber fighters.
Bah. That sucks.
Front cover art of the self titled LP by Odyssey, released on Tamla Motown west coast subsidiary MoWest in 1972. Seven people, four in the middle distance, three more in the far distance, standing on a beach. The tide is out. A bright sun, low in the sky, shines behind them - the people are thus only visible as silhouettes. The exposed sand is covered with a thin layer of water, giving the impression at first glance that the people are standing on water. There is a small bare tree in the foreground and what might be a pier on the far left, only partially in shot. It’s a great photograph!

Odyssey - s/t (1972)
Gave up half way through the first LP I tried today* (recommended by the Sp*t*fy alg, thanks for nowt alg) and have switched to this. Much more my thing. Not the “Native” New Yorkers of the disco era!
*’Afreaka!’ by Demon Fuzz (1970)
Allister Heath article headlined “If we surrender to Classic Album Thursday, we will lose our country forever”
When Merve* left, AG abandoned their fun, disco side entirely 😔There’s maybe 2 good tracks but yeah I get where you’re coming from.
*Coincidentally(?) a new track feat. Merve popped up on streaming the same day Garip came out. Not saying it’s a masterpiece but it’s got that slinkiness this LP lacks
Tonight at approx 21.20 (UK) @stereolabgroop.bsky.social play for Gideon Coe, Marc Riley and BBC 6 Music.
Pretty much every track is worth owning. My only quibble is whether it works as an end-to-end listening experience.

Bob Stanley’s 60s harmony & sunshine pop comp for Ace Records - the CD was a Christmas ‘25 present from the fam. The quality is high throughout, but so much of this stuff b2b is exhausting.
