You can successfully boycott your local deli where the owner hangs Nazi flags. You really can't boycott FB and Amazon, not in any large-scale meaningful way. It would simply be making a personal choice about what you can and can't tolerate. I don't eat at Chick-fil-A for this reason.

Unfortunately we've allowed megacorps to overrun every aspect of American life to the point where a large-scale boycott is essentially impossible. The answer is to legislate these billionaires, but the American people said "no."

Not the same thing but every summer my friend tries to convince me to go with her to a local "lazy river" place and every time I have to tell her that it sounds vile.

I'm going on almost 20 years of working with the public in some capacity or another and my conclusion is that unfortunately, a lot of people aren't very smart*, and they're mad about it.

*smart meaning like, basic sense and rudimentary 2-step thinking

I once said this on tumblr about people who skip tipping at restaurants and people said I was being classist.

I think COVID wiped people's memories. Trump pardoned so many egregious criminals as long as he could profit off them that it almost became a joke. He never needed an excuse! Norms and laws don't enter his mind when he makes decisions. Acting like Biden just gave him the green light is insane.

But do you want to fight people that crazy? I don't think so.

I don't see it lasting long once hopeful self publishers see the results. I spoke at length with a woman who used a vanity press for her first novel and before they were even done with the process, she was asking for her book rights back bc their work was so subpar.

I'm applying for new jobs atm at every time I catch myself doubting whether or not I'm qualified, I think, "Would a mid white guy think he was underqualified for this? Absolutely not." Then I apply anyway.

idk how to tell you this but most people have no idea how the government works and they know there's overspending, so easily digestible dipshit-friendly "solutions" like DOGE sound fkn fantastic to the median voter.

I mean, that's kind of what I'm getting at. This is asking a ton of money for a service that exists for free/is on programs you already own. Vanity presses are BS in general, but at least there are people on the other end, justifying(ish, to some) the cost.

What I really can't wrap my head around is how they're justifying a $5k bill. When we spend that much self publishing, it's bc we're paying humans to do an objectively better job than AI could. A fully automated process that produces inferior work should be...cheaper. By a lot.

Yes but also my emotions fly into turmoil when I see women in uniform wearing ponytails, braids, etc, barely any hint of hairspray, because my jealousy burns white hot that they don't have to endure the Marine-reg shellacked sock bun that physically hurts and pulls out your hair. This right here. I DO feel defeated, but that is bc they have amassed almost unchecked power thru a total disregard of law, and our "defenders" keep crowing ab using the law to stop them. That isn't going to work. Laws only work when they're enforced, and they aren't being enforced.
